The carpentry vice in the home workshop is simply an indispensable thing for those involved in the manufacture of wooden structures and carvings. Thanks to them, it will be much more convenient to process certain blanks. It is best to do this, also using a special workbench.
Of course, you can also process the sides or end of the board with clamps pressed to the bar. But the work will be much easier if you make a joiner's vise for a workbench with your own hands.
Finished product design
Joiner's vice can be made independently or purchased in specialized retail outlets. The purchased product is a housing with a movable bar. It moves along two guides, and the base is a place for screwing nuts or bolts to the vice.
On sponges there is an opportunity to fix various wooden, plastic or metal overlays. They are needed in order to protect the workpiece from damage. It is especially advisable to set this if you are working with soft types of wood.
Shop vices are able to fix workpieces at least 20 cm, and in order not to move the screw for clamping for too long, it is better to use a special spring mechanism, which will do this much faster by moving the movable lip. In the required position, the tree is fixed with a screw equipped with a trapezoid thread.
Features of homemade designs
Well, if you are going to make a joiner's vise for a workbench with your own hands, then they will have a slightly different structure. As a basis, take a screw with a thread of 20 mm, while its length is 150 mm. Often, such designs are used in corners of a sports type. They are inserted into vertical pipes in order to raise certain things higher with their help. The thread in such screws is large enough, while they are not designed for heavy loads. However, it is quite possible to make a joiner's vice with their help. It is better that the screw is more authentic, since the distance between the lips will increase.
Be sure to select the appropriate studs that you can specifically purchase or find at home for this job. Other types of fasteners may be suitable instead. Some even used motorcycle accessories for mirrors. They have a curved structure, so you need to straighten them with a sledgehammer before work.
Product manufacturing example
And now we will consider in more detail how to make a carpentry vice with your own hands. To get started, make a board out of flow for two clamping jaws. The size is determined individually, depending on your work surface in the workshop. Then, on the front sponge, you need to make markings for two holes, and they should be spaced as close as possible to each of the edges. We place the front board over the back and make a hole in it, depending on the diameter of the clamping bolt. Under the T-shaped nuts we drill holes according to the marks made earlier and then we insert them there. Our joiner's vice is ready. Now you can put the back sponge on the table, press it with a clamp and, while holding the part, make cuts.

To secure the handle to the long head of the screw, there must be a slot. If it does not correspond to the handle in size, then it can be modified by means of a file, expanding the hole. Instead of a lever for loosening the clamping screw, you can take a design with a ring instead of a hat.
The carpentry vise uses a pine board nailed to the table as a fixed sponge. And its moving part should have a thickness of 20 mm, a width of 18 mm and a length of 50 cm.
The hole for the screw must be done in both parts by means of an adjustable drill for a diameter of 21 mm, but for studs you can use the usual 10 mm, respectively. So that both sponges can be worked through in this way at the same time, nail them with each other with nails, and then pull out the nails at the end of the work.
Product Benefits
We examined how to make a joiner's vise at home for the convenience of working with wood and other workpieces. There are other options for their manufacture, in particular designs with higher jaws, which are used exclusively for manual carpentry. Often in a working workshop, carpentry vices have a task called βdouble screwβ. The classic version of the product - two threads and two sponges, which are fixed in front of the workbench, has been widely used for many centuries in a row.
Moreover, the joiner's vice is a fairly simple thing to use. It is enough just to insert the part that you want to process between the lips and clamp it with bolts. Thanks to them, the joiners got rid of many problems, in particular, they can process parts regardless of size, and even with their help the back is leveled above the desktop surface.
Masters note the key benefits of a vise:
- they can be placed anywhere on the work surface of the workshop, in this regard they are very portable;
- since this product is not used by the master every day, they are easy to remove and place on the wall in a designated place;
- the product can be mounted on a table and used as a large clamp.
How to make a vise with a press-in nut
To make such a product with your own hands, you need to prepare the following:
- bolt with nut for dilution;
- staples metal.
So that the key does not fall off the nut when compressing a wooden or metal workpiece, it must be pressed into it. To this end, the sponges need to be heated on a fire and cover it too. To assemble such a design with your own hands, you will need a minimum of materials and the necessary parts.
Vise assembly based on shock absorbers
If you have experience and imagination, then you can assemble such a product from any old parts and devices that can be found in the workshop or garage. In a specific example, we need:
- shock absorbers;
- nut M18;
- metal-based corner;
- hairpin;
- rod from the gas stop for the construction handle.
With the help of all the details we collect the vice, and then we attach them to the table. Between the shock absorbers in the corners we drill holes and attach bolts with countersunk heads. To make working with key material easier, the corners can be welded. Shock absorbers will be easier to move if burned a little.
Any joiner working with wood and other materials, notes that the joiner's vise for a workbench is a very convenient fixture, which greatly simplifies the work. Moreover, they can easily be made independently.
