The World Intellectual Property Organization is a global forum that focuses on political issues, improving cooperation, and providing services and information. WIPO is one of the most important self-financing institutions that collaborates with the United Nations system. It consists of 189 states. Francis Harry is the Director General of WIPO. The headquarters of the organization is in Geneva.
Main Purpose and Convention
The main goal of the organization is to work on the formation of intellectual property (IP) and its transformation into a balanced and effective system that can create the necessary conditions for innovation in favor of each person. The WIPO Convention is a document that was first signed in 1967 in Stockholm. Based on this official paper, the organization was established. The convention sets out the basic rules and processes of the governing bodies, as well as their powers.
What does WIPO do
WIPO offers assistance to various governments, businesses, and the public to realize the benefits that IP can bring. The organization provides a political forum designed to create the same international IP standards in an ever-changing global situation. The World Intellectual Property Organization also provides international services related to the cross-border protection of IP powers and deals with conflict resolution.
To provide a link between the IP system and the exchange of knowledge, a technical infrastructure is regulated. WIPO provides a variety of programs related to collaboration and capacity building. This allows countries around the world to use IP for the development of the economy, culture and science. In addition, the organization provides reference materials on the necessary information in the field of IP for all countries.
Strategy
In 2008, WIPO underwent a strategic restructuring that entailed the adoption of the nine core objectives of the organization. They reflect ever-changing tasks and disclose WIPO's activities. The main goals are as follows:
- balance in the development of an international base of IP standards;
- top-quality services to improve the global IP protection system;
- supporting the interests of the development of various social spheres through the promotion of IP;
- coordination and improvement of universal infrastructure;
- providing a source of reference materials for all countries, as well as access to analytical data in the field of IP;
- improved cooperation between countries;
- resolution of IP disputes and conflicts in the context of global strategic goals;
- providing fast communication within WIPO, between Member States, as well as all interested parties;
- a high-quality administrative and financial support structure that helps with the implementation of WIPO's programs.
Patent Law Agreement
Patent Law was passed in 2000. This is a very important official document that governs many of WIPO's international processes. It harmonizes and optimizes the formal actions that apply to transnational as well as regional patents and applications. In addition, the purpose of the treaty is to improve all WIPO procedures, as well as work on user amenities.
The patent law takes into account all important factors and requirements that may apply in the offices of the contracting parties. An exception may be only a requirement regarding the filing date of the application.
Copyright
The copyright and related rights agreement covers the main problems that may arise for official authors of certain works. A huge range of literary and artistic works is regulated by this law:
- books
- musical works;
- movies;
- architectural creations;
- computer programs;
- advertising;
- pictures and stuff.
Various ideas, processes, mathematical concepts or methods of functioning are not subject to this agreement.
The formal copyright and related rights treaty deals primarily with the form of expression. The law applies to a variety of names or slogans, depending on the degree of authorial creativity that is present in them. Names are generally not protected by copyright.
Under this law, there are two main rules:
- the copyright holder must receive financial compensation if his work has been used by others;
- the subject has the opportunity to claim the right of authorship or to object to changes in the creation that could harm the reputation of the author.
Intellectual property
Intellectual law is a legal term that is currently in widespread use. There are many objective prerequisites for the development of it as a separate industry. At the moment, it is developing dynamically.
The object of this right is the diverse results of intellectual activity, which require the necessary methods of protection and legal regulation. Previously, this aspect was not the subject of discussion in science. This is a fundamentally new way of studying the phenomena that appeared only with the advent of the fourth revolution in industry. Many researchers say that intellectual law as a system of property obligations for managing IP objects has a continuous development trend. This process is inevitable, as new objects of intellectual property are constantly appearing. Thus, this law regulates relations that relate to the creation, protection, and use of IP.
WIPO Results
The World Intellectual Property Organization has a special place in the United Nations system. WIPO's biennial budget for 2016 and 2017 has already been allocated to a variety of important goals. All costs are approved by Member States. They are covered by the proceeds generated by the provision of services provided in exchange for the repayment of fees by participants in the following international registration systems: PCT, Madrid and Hague organizations.
Governing bodies
The World Intellectual Property Organization operates under the supervision of certain external and internal bodies. But most of the activity falls on the shoulders of its employees.
