Optimization of access to files and folders. How to do defragmentation.

Devices for recording information need so-called optimization. First of all, this concerns the hard drive of a computer, which can contain a huge amount of content. In windows xp, the Winchester optimization procedure is based on 3 pillars: enabling dma mode, caching write to disk, and defragmentation.

If the first two parameters are already configured by default in the system, then the last of them always raises the question of how to defragment. Since it is it that requires periodic intervention by the user.

What is defragmentation. Process description

Before considering how to do defragmentation, we describe the process of this procedure itself. Then we consider the built-in xp utilities and the auslogics software package, which also has a separate defragmenter application.

So, the above procedure has the following features. When a user launches a program to defragment a disk, he assumes a result - acceleration of work with a computer and launch of everyday tasks.

On the hard disk, data is written in small portions by sector. A file or folder with files fits entirely within one sector. But over time, with the constant addition of new content to the HDD, these same objects are shifted relative to the primary position so that one part of the file or folder can be in the initial sector, and the rest in other non-adjacent sectors. Disparate fragments of content arise, access to which takes longer than usual.

Thus, in order to speed up the reading of data from the disk and, therefore, reduce the opening time of the application or document, you need to combine these fragments. How to do disk defragmentation, we now look at the example of the standard windows xp utility - defrag.exe program

This utility has a graphical interface, and you can call it through the working system management console - MMC. There are two ways to start this console.

  1. In the "start" menu, open the "run" item, then enter mmc in the working window of the commands, but I recommend doing it wiser.
  2. Namely: right-click (touchpad) on the "computer" icon and select the "computer control" option in the drop-down list .
  3. The windows management console opens, divided into two parts. In the one that is smaller and located to the left, we will finally see how to do defragmentation.
  4. Select the “disk defragmentation” item and click on it. A window opens in which you can perform this procedure on specific sections of the hard drive.
  5. Suppose we need to find out if there are any additional fragments on system partition C. Select the icon of this section with a mouse click and click "Disk Analysis". The program will analyze the current state of the partition and display a detailed summary of whether defragmentation is needed for the selected volume.
  6. If the disk needs processing, press the “defragmentation” button and expect the result. After completing the procedure, the application displays a report on the work done. If some files could not be optimized, there may not be enough free space on the partition. Then, before defragmenting, free up additional space, and then try again.

We use to optimize auslogics 5

The above set of programs is designed to optimize windows. Auslogics 5 Series also includes a defragmenter. Here is how to defragment it using it (it is assumed that this complex is already installed):

  1. Launch the application using the shortcut on the windows desktop.
  2. Click on the icon in the form of a blue ball in the tray (near the clock).
  3. Right-click on the list of “Tools” - “Disk Maintenance / Defragmentation” sequentially.
  4. In the window that opens, analyze or defragment the partitions. The utility from auslogics has advanced features when compared with the optimizer built into the system. Otherwise, its functionality is similar to the defrag.exe interface
