Not every person in his life will have to write a monograph, but for general development you should know what it is. In addition, this can be useful to you at one of the stages of professional activity.
Monograph - what is it?
Translated from the Greek language “monos” - “one”, “grafus” - “write”, that is, “unified” or “written about a single”. A scientific monograph is a work written by one or several authors, in which one topic or several summary topics that are closely related to each other are widely disclosed. Such work reveals a certain problem and gives detailed answers to a number of prepared questions. This type of research belongs to the genre of scientific prose and is written strictly in a scientific or scientific-journalistic style. A more detailed analysis of a particular topic, the nomination of new theories, hypotheses and concepts - all this is provided by the monograph. What is it, how to work with it, what is it for, and many more other questions that the authors answer to various problems. For this kind of treatise characteristic are extensive bibliographic lists, as well as notes and links to other sources.
Incorrect interpretation of the word "monograph"
We already know what it is, but still there are people who misunderstand the term itself, adopted for such scientific works. The word "monograph" denotes the unity of the topic that is revealed, but not that this work was written by one author. It may be such that over a hundred people worked on the whole book (a whole scientific team). That is why it should be understood that the “mono” part in this case refers to one topic, not one author.
Appearance
Externally, the monograph can take on a completely different look. Depending on its subject, the design of a printed sheet may be different. For example, if an essay is devoted to issues of art or literature, the author can afford to use colorful drawings and decorative fonts.
Design Features
However, there are State standards for publishing that govern the design of the monograph (GOST 7.60-2003, clause 3.2.4.3.1.1). According to these standards, it is clearly defined what kind of finished text should take. As for the amount of work, there are no restrictions. A monograph is considered a classic, written on more than 120 A4 pages with the fourteenth point of the Times New Roman font at one and a half intervals.
Features of publishing and labor protection
Before publishing his work, the author must review it with specialists with a degree. There should be at least two people. When defending a scientific degree, a monograph can serve as a dissertation. It should be noted that this is quite rare.
Non-Series Scientific Publication - Monograph
What is this, we already know, but there is a different interpretation. Library science deciphers this term as a designation of any types of non-serial publications, the volume of which is limited to several volumes. For example, a monograph on psychology can be a separate book or a publication that includes five to six volumes.
