When deciding to do repairs in their apartment, many people have the desire to exchange old Soviet doors for new modern ones. Beauty, grace and variety of models attract even the most fastidious owners. But here's the trouble: the width of the door frame was less than the wall thickness. In such cases, door extensions come to the rescue, which is also called a cover plate or an additional board.
These elements are not only capable of playing a practical role (correcting uneven slopes), but they are also a wonderful aesthetic decoration of the interior of the room. Therefore, before proceeding with the replacement of doorways, any owner tries to find out how to install dobors on the doors with their own hands. The recommendations and instructions of experienced builders will be very useful for those who took up this work for the first time.
Appointments
Previously, in Soviet times, all building materials were produced strictly according to state standards. Thanks to this indicator, all window and door openings had a specific thickness. Therefore, when installing the door frame, which was also made strictly according to the standard, there was no question of fitting doors and windows.
Currently, manufacturers of building materials are repelled mainly from the technical capabilities of their enterprise, so many bricks or blocks began to be produced in different thicknesses. As a result, this led to different wall thicknesses in the doorway. In order to eliminate such a discrepancy, doors on interior doors were invented.
Functional use of pads
Structurally, these elements are an ordinary board that exactly fits into the door. In the manufacture of door frames, modern manufacturers immediately make a special groove to install the extras as one unit with the door. This technological solution greatly simplifies the finishing work and creates an aesthetic appearance of the door frame.
Extras perform such functions:
- sealing slopes of doorways;
- hiding irregularities of brickwork;
- eliminating the possibility of warping the box;
- significant reinforcement of the door structure.
A reasonable question arises: "How to install extras on the door and is it possible to do it yourself?" It is possible, and such elements are installed not only on new doors, but also in the repair of old doorways.
Benefits of Using Extras
Unlike simple cement slopes, extensions to interior doors create visual integrity of the door frame design, completely covering the missing slope width. Therefore, when buying a door unit, it is advisable to immediately select the color and additional boards.
Advantages of using pads:
- simplicity of installation of add-ons allows saving time and money for their installation;
- using an additional board it is possible to correct irregularities of a door jamb;
- the possibility of selecting a color scheme, depending on the general style decision of the interior of the room;
- lack of contact with wet solutions during finishing works eliminates damage and soaking of the door block;
- presentable appearance and long service life.
Types of extensions
Most often, standard-type extensions are made of wood, MDF panels or laminated boards. The separation of elements into main types occurs mainly according to the degree of completeness and quality of product processing.
The following types of add-ons are available:
1. Conventional linings are planks with raw edges or edges. On the one hand, the part has no finish at all, therefore, when the width of one extension is not enough, it is necessary to use several trims.
2. Finished overlays with finished edges. The dimensions of the extensions of this type are selected strictly in accordance with the width of the door jamb.
3. Telescopic extensions are equipped with a thorn-groove connecting system, as well as a machined edge. All elements of the doorway with such overlays are interconnected using special locks.
Design features of additional boards
A common add-on is a strip of laminated or wood-fiber board without a facing film. Experienced specialists believe that processing the ends of the edges is a waste of time and money, since one end of the lining is covered with a platband, and the other is snug against the door block. True, with such an installation, a deviation of even a few millimeters will be very noticeable with a full installation, so the work must be performed with extreme accuracy.
You can get rid of such a small visible drawback in work by gluing an edge tape to the ends of the extension. Such processing of the edges of the plank will eliminate the swelling of the slab under the influence of moisture, which is especially necessary for door blocks installed in the kitchen or in the bathroom.
The design of the telescopic extension is considered more complex. This design allows fastening using grooves without the use of nails and screws. The full width of the extension is adjustable due to the depth of the groove. A spike is made on one side of such an element, and a groove on the other. It is very difficult to make such an overlay yourself. Therefore, before installing a telescopic extension, it is better to purchase it in a distribution network, choosing the tone of the door.
Materials for the manufacture of additional materials
Often the overlay is used not only as a connecting element of the door structure, but also as a decor item for decorating the interior.
For such purposes, the following materials are used:
1. Wood is considered a beautiful and convenient material, as it has good heat-insulating properties and a modern attractive appearance. For lovers of antiquity, you can brush wood.
2. Often used plates of laminated boards.
3. Plastic extensions are resistant to mechanical wear and are very practical when cleaning panels from contamination. The good water resistance of such add-ons determines their widespread use in bathrooms.
4. The MDF panel made of fine shavings is also a wooden structure covered with a specially selected color film.
5. Drywall is considered a universal material, which is decorated to match not only the doors, but also the walls of the room.
6. Metal add-ons are used to decorate entrance doors that have a metal base.
When buying a door unit, it is advisable to purchase one manufacturer, this will greatly simplify the installation of these elements. Usually they are marked based on the type of door unit and its size.
Installation
Installation of additional levels can be carried out by several methods. Therefore, before starting work, you need to think about how to install the add-ons. The mounting methods for the linings are as follows:
- fastening of extensions on a previously prepared frame;
- installation of overlays directly on the plane of an aperture;
- paneling at the expense of the door frame.
This element does not carry a large mechanical load on the doorway, therefore, it is possible to install additional elements with liquid nails, as well as using mounting foam.
Grooved mounting
It is advisable to buy a door frame with a pre-made groove. This will greatly speed up the installation process.
The technological process of installing the extension in the groove is as follows:
1. First, measure the distance from the edge of the slope to the installed box. Such measurements must be made at several points in order to estimate the slope.
2. When conducting such measurements, it is necessary to take into account the depth of the groove. Summing up these readings, we determine the total width of the lining.
3. Then we mark the workpiece and with the help of an electric jigsaw we cut out the necessary part.
4. Next, the extension is inserted into the groove on the door block.
5. The same technological operations are performed on all sides of the slope.
6. The upper extension is laid on vertical planks, forming the letter "P". In this case, it is necessary to strictly observe a right angle to the plane of the block.
7. To temporarily fix the correct position of the elements, you can apply tape.
8. Further, all voids must be filled with mounting foam.
9. After the foam has completely dried, the protruding residues are trimmed with a sharp knife.
10. Then the platbands are installed.
Installation of overlays without groove
And how to install extensions if there is no groove in the door frame? This is also quite realistic to do on your own, but you will have to very accurately derive the ideal cut line of the bar.
The technology of work looks like this:
- First of all, it is necessary to make accurate measurements in several places from the edge of the slope to the installed door unit.
- Next, you need to carefully cut out the suitable parts.
- An edge tape is glued to the formed sections.
- Half thin nails are hammered into the ends of the pads with a pitch of 20-25 cm. The hats are cut at an angle.
- Then they nail vertical extensions, slamming the bar with nails.
- The top plate is placed on vertical extensions, and then control the right angle.
- The upper bar is nailed.
- All voids are filled with foam.
Mounting on metal doors
By design, the entrance iron doors are not very wide. There are no grooves in the metal boxes, so the extensions are installed on a pre-prepared frame, which can be made of wooden blocks or plasterboard aluminum profile. The frame is made strictly according to the level to hide all surface imperfections.
Plasterboard planks are fixed on top of the frame. Mounting can be done either with liquid nails, or using self-tapping screws. Thus, two tasks are solved at once - the reliability of the base and good thermal insulation, which is very important for the entrance doors to the apartment.
The last step is to install the platband.
Remember that when installing add-ons, you must be as careful and careful as possible. Any, even very small, error can lead to a disastrous result, which will be very difficult to fix.
