Sevastopol is one of the few cities in the world with a heroic history, which is fully reflected in chronicles, museum displays, memorials and monuments. The centuries-old evolution of the Crimean peninsula is inextricably linked with Sevastopol and its protected part Tauric Chersonesos. Numerous guests visiting Sevastopol, the sights of the hero city cause a keen interest. Sevastopol had to survive several wars: the Crimean War of 1855, the assault of the German invaders in 1941-42 and the bloody Crimean operation of 1944. In addition to fierce fighting on land, Sevastopol took part in naval battles held under the command of Admiral Kornilov. After the defeat of the Russian fleet near Yevpatoria, the surviving sailors, led by Kornilov, took part in the battles on the Malakhov Kurgan, where Admiral Kornilov heroically died, sharing the fate of Admiral Nakhimov, who also folded his head in July 1855 on the Malakhov Kurgan.
The heroic past of the city of Sevastopol, the sights of wartime generated several urban symbols. One of them is the Monument to the Scuttled Ships. The monument is considered the emblem of the hero city, it is installed in the sea on the beam of Primorsky Boulevard. It was created in 1905, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Defense of Sevastopol. During the Crimean War, in 1855, by order of Admiral Kornilov, about twenty Russian ships were sunk, which thus blocked the enemy’s ships from entering the Sevastopol Bay. The monument to the scuttled ships is designated on the
coat of arms of Sevastopol and is an integral symbol of the whole life of the hero city.
A symbolic symbol of the historical past of Sevastopol is Vladimir Cathedral. This temple has its own story. It was originally planned to build a cathedral in honor of Grand Duke Vladimir on the ruins of Chersonesos, where the prince had once been baptized. Admiral Lazarev, who also participated in choosing a place for the cathedral, proposed building a temple in the center of Sevastopol, since in the distance the cathedral would not be visited by people. His proposal was accepted and preparations for the construction began. Lazarev soon died and it was decided to bury his remains at the location of the future cathedral. Thus, the crypt of the admiral was built in the foundation of the temple. Subsequently, Vladimir Cathedral as the tomb took the ashes of admirals Kornilov, Istomin and Nakhimov. The cathedral has a
memorial plaque with the names of four heroes.
The most peaceful attraction of Sevastopol is the ruins of the legendary
Tauric Chersonesos. Chersonese since its founding has existed for a long time, almost two thousand years. When the excavations of the ancient city began, so many archaeological rarities were immediately found that they were enough for a whole museum, which currently successfully receives visitors. The events of the Crimean War today are presented in the unique memorial complex "Panorama", which is located on the Historical Boulevard of Sevastopol. In a huge building of the "rotunda" type, a panoramic picture "The Defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855" was mounted. The painting depicts the battles of one day on June 18, 1855 and has a length of 114 meters at a height of 14 meters. Visitors to the memorial gradually get the feeling that they themselves are on the Malakhov Hill, directly in the thick of the fighting.
