A tractor equipped with a mill that combines the properties of a cultivator and a plow allows you to quickly and with minimal time costs solve all the problems associated with soil cultivation. This assistant cannot be dispensed with in areas planted with coarse-stalked plants, and also characterized by swimming, complex soil. The functionality of milling cutters is not limited to this; they provide fertilizers of all kinds, level the surface, mix the soil layers, remove weeds and chop the vegetation at the same time. Devices are indispensable in improving meadows and pastures, processing complex soil layers.
Varieties
The milling cutter for tillage can be of several types: field, swamp, row-crop and garden. The latter is common in the treatment of forest belts, weeds and loosening. Field species are necessary for caring for land intended for planting rice and vegetable crops, which are characterized by a heavy, waterlogged structure. Bog options are useful both in the processing of meadows and pastures, and in drained swampy soil. By tilled aggregates, the soil is milled between rows of seedlings and cereal crops.
Types of blades
The plate knife is located on a rotating shaft and is the basis of the design of the device, high-quality steel is used for its manufacture. There are several types of knives suitable for various tasks and environmental conditions:
- the most durable option is the chisel, it can be used on rocky, dense and complex areas;
- sickle-shaped are universally applicable, the only limitation is that they cannot be operated on soil with rocky deposits;
- standard knives are suitable for both heavy and light soil, it is important that it is distinguished by the absence of a large number of stones and clogging.
Features of work
Soil treatment is performed by steel protruding teeth (blades). Devices with rear and front teeth are characterized by the addition of special pegs used to adjust the degree of processing.
A do-it-yourself milling cutter with front blades differs in the placement of tines under the engine and their circulation in the direction of travel. To simplify the movement produced by working teeth, the wheel part is located on the rear side. It is worth noting that such a unit is not used in untreated soil and solid rocks.
Equipment with rear blades is equipped with an engine that drives the wheels. Such units can have two options for teeth:
- Blades with integrated reverse rotation. This species is highly effective in the processing of solid earth. A tillage cutter with similar equipment is suitable for use on untreated ground.
- Cogs spinning forward with wheels.
In some cases, the blades can be turned in both directions, due to which the advantages of both options are combined.
Small cutters with front teeth include mini cultivators. They combine the ability to work on a small area, light weight and maneuverability. The choice of a specific option depends on the type of soil and the total amount of work.
How to make a milling cutter for tillage
If necessary, the device can be made by yourself. The next option differs in the greatest ease of execution, while it is worth deciding on the power plant used - it can be an electric or chainsaw.
Steel pipes with walls about 0.5 mm thick are needed to make the frame. The power plant is fixed on it with clamps. The mechanism is based on a two-stage chain transmission, with the chain and sprockets from a regular bicycle coming up to the first. Second gear is more powerful, so motorcycle parts can be used here.
Auxiliary chain transmission provides wheels. Homemade milling cutters for tillage look like pipes with a large diameter, on which 6 teeth are placed. On both sides are welded axles equipped with bearings. It also requires the installation of screws for axle and chain placement. For each chain transmission it is necessary to make covers for protection against damage and grounding for the saw.
Equipment for walk-behind tractor

During the work, the blades are brought to the required size and bent in one direction at a certain angle. All parts are attached to the base using a welding machine. The edge is sharpened in accordance with the direction of rotation of the device. Then the coupling unit is connected to the resulting structure and the adjustment is made during the test inclusion.
It is worth noting that steel parts with a diameter within 50 cm should be used for assembly, in this case, the depth of entry into the soil will be 25 cm. After switching on, you need to make sure the sequence of teeth entering the ground, the absence of impacts and sudden movements.
How to extend the service life
Of particular importance is regular maintenance, which includes a list of actions to ensure high efficiency and long-term operation of the machines. The planned work package should be carried out in a timely manner, it is also necessary for better performance, saving grease and gasoline.
The soil cultivator is cleaned of plant debris and dried pieces of soil, then the technical condition of the elements and the adjustment of the fasteners are checked. It is also necessary to inspect the drive, the trailed mechanism and working bodies.
