Creating bouquets of colored paper is a very exciting process. From paper roses you can make stunning compositions. You can use buds to decorate cards or gift envelopes. But how to make a rose out of colored paper? There are several ways, we will dwell on some of them.
What color paper to choose?
To begin with, we will determine the material that we will use. Colored paper should be sufficiently thick, evenly colored on both sides. Single-sided colored paper is suitable only if the wrong side is not visible on the finished product. The better and brighter the material, the more interesting the rose will be.
You can use printed double-sided paper. It has suitable density and softness. In stationery stores, whole sets are sold with different colors of bright A4 paper.
Colored corrugated paper is ideal for creating lush rose buds. The texture of corrugated paper allows you to stretch the blanks of the petals, which brings the made rose closer to natural. The rough embossed surface resembles the texture of living roses. If you try, you can make a rose that will be difficult to distinguish from the real one.
Crepe paper is also used for making roses and other flowers. It is similar to corrugation, but it also has some differences: the texture of crepe paper is much thinner and softer, and the waves are smaller. From such colored paper, copies of natural flowers are obtained, they can be distinguished from real ones only with a detailed study.
You can use paper in silence. It is very thin and light, so it’s better to make small roses out of it, it will be difficult to make large buds.
To make roses from colored paper with your own hands, you need to make a lot of effort. All actions are performed accurately and efficiently. On the finished bud there should not be any smudges of glue or stains.
Necessary equipment and materials
No matter what material you decide to use, you will need the following equipment:
- marking pencil;
- sharp scissors;
- stationery knife;
- PVA glue;
- glue gun, rods;
- wooden skewers or wire;
- ruler;
- brushes;
- paints.
Get yourself a place to do your job conveniently. Hands should always be clean, otherwise, when you bend light sheets of paper, stains will remain. Patterns for cutting petals are better to draw in advance on cardboard and cut. For one volumetric rose, a large number of petals may be needed.
Be aware of safety precautions when working with equipment. The temperature of the glue in the glue gun is quite high, with careless use you can get skin burns.
The easiest way to make a rose from colored paper
If you want to make a product to decorate a flat surface, and it can be postcards, boxes, envelopes, etc., then you can use the following method of making rose flowers from colored paper: twisting the bud from a spiral.
For work, we need double-sided colored paper. Randomly cut a circle from the sheet with a diagonal of about 10 cm. Now start cutting a strip of 1.5-2 cm wide in a circle, moving to the center. You should end up with a spiral. Make some of these blanks.
We start spreading the rose from the center. Twist the spiral tightly to form a tube, then lay out the free end around the first curl so that there is a small gap between the turns. Secure the tip with glue. Fix the base of the bud with glue. You can make the simplest rose from colored paper in a few minutes.
The bud itself can be glued to the product with a glue gun, this is the most convenient way to fix it. Collect a composition from such buds and decorate it with paper leaves or twigs.
Quiet paper roses for applique
Applique is the decoration of the base with cut out elements of paper, fabric or leather. Figures can be flat or voluminous. We will consider creating a rose applique from colored paper in silence. The structure of this paper is thin, translucent, the sheet itself lends itself to deformation. The flower will be voluminous and magnificent.
The technique of making rose applications from colored paper in silence differs from working with other materials. To make the bud voluminous, it is necessary to use paper in several layers. If your rose is small, then one layer will be enough. Cut a strip of paper measuring 6 * 40 cm. Fold the strip along half. Glue one edge to the intended location of the future bud. Start tightly twisting the bud and fix it with a glue gun. When approaching the edges of the bud, you need to indent so that visually the bud seems airy and lush. In some places you can create an accordion effect. Take the edges of the paper a little, this will give the product a natural sloppiness. Secure the free edge so that it is not visible. You can use paper of different colors. Make the central part of the bud darker, the edges brighter. This contrast gives realism to the artificial rose.
Origami roses
Origami is the art of folding paper figures. The display of the object using paper is quite schematic, but the execution process itself is very exciting even for adults. The photo shows how to assemble roses from colored paper step by step.
For work, we need colored paper for A4 red color. We bend the sheet so that a square is obtained, cut off the excess edge. We make four bends: horizontal, vertical and two from the corners. Fold the sheet in half to make a rectangle, and hide the upper places of the fold to the center. You should get a triangle, which is shown in Figure 3. We bring the blades of the triangle to the upper corner, iron the sheet. We do the same on the other hand.
We turn the resulting square so that the blades are inside (Fig. 5-6). We bend the pockets. They will fix each other. Turn the workpiece over on the other side, and do the same. The rose is ready, it remains only to give it volume. To do this, blow into the hole, as shown in Fig. 9. Optionally, bend the petals. The stem is inserted into the hole at the base of the bud.
Volumetric rose from colored paper
Making this type of rose will require the use of double-sided colored paper for photocopying red and green. Patterns for the petals will vary depending on the desired bud size. To get a rose with a diameter of 6 cm, you will need templates 2.5 cm by 3 cm.
Make a blank template from cardboard. To make the rose magnificent, you can use about 20 petals. Mark the contours of the petals according to the template and cut them out of colored paper. You can make small flaws and bumps along the edges of the petals. Fold the edges of the petals as shown in the photo. A rose of colored paper is more realistic if you give the petals a rounded shape.
The first central lobe must be turned into a tube, the rest will go along the edge of the central part. Make sure they are evenly spaced. To fix the petals, it is better to use a glue gun. To make it easier to stick, they need to be slightly bent at the base.
When the bud is ready, move on to fixing the leaves. They will go from the bottom center of the bud to the sides. You can make leaves with cloves, like a real rose. The easiest way to make leaflets is shown in the photo above, but, if desired, they can be made more realistic by giving them a raised shape with a toothpick. Apply a toothpick to print the shape of a Christmas tree resembling a leaf vein.
How to make a realistic rose?
The most beautiful and "lively" roses are obtained from corrugated paper. It is this material that is able to accurately imitate the elements of a real rose. To make a flower, we need green corrugated paper, for buds you can choose the color that you like best.
Marks the contours of the petals on a sheet of paper, cut them out. Each petal must be separately prepared before fixing. Take the petal in your hands and use your thumbs to slightly push the surface at the base of the petal. The result is a rounded cavity. The ends of the petals randomly twist inward.
To make a bulky bud, you need foil. Crumple a small piece of foil so that a volumetric drop is obtained. Wrap it with corrugated paper, fix it with a glue gun. Now you can lay out the petals. They should neatly fit the bud from below, and from above the edge will be free. As the petals grow, the shape of the rose will begin to emerge.
If you want to get a closed bud, then you can limit yourself to a few petals, for a lush bud you need 20-25 petals. In a bouquet of roses from colored paper corrugation, you can use a combination of flowers of different sizes. Small closed buds and lush flowers will complement each other perfectly.
Stem and leaves for a rose
To make the stem, you will need a wooden skewer or floristic wire. To give a green color, you can wrap our blank with a spiral strip of colored paper. An ideal option would be a tape tape. It is sold in stores for creativity.
If you make a realistic rose, then one stem will not be enough. Prepare several pieces of wire 3-6 cm in size, and wrap them with tape. The stem and branches are ready, it remains to make leaves.
The best option for making leaves is corrugated paper. Cut the leaves according to the pattern. Take a toothpick and carefully make streaks, pressing a leaf with a toothpick, imitating a longitudinal vein, and the veins extending from it in the form of a Christmas tree. Twist the ends of the leaves with a straw. When all the leaves and the bases of the branches are ready, you can start collecting the branches.
Begin with the leaves. Take the blank of a small side branch, tape the sheet to it, and wrap it further, to the point of connection with the main branch. Thus, the whole branch is going to. You can use multiple leaflets for one branch.
Decoration of finished roses
How to make roses from colored paper more realistic and look like real flowers? There are some interesting techniques. If the petals look even and patterned, you can crumple them a little, make bumps along the edge. To do this, you need to carefully study the location of the petals of a real rose, and then try to repeat the shape of the petals with paper.
Process the edges of the petals with a darker color. For example, if the bud itself is white, the edges can be made red. To do this, you need gouache or watercolor. The paint must be strongly diluted with water, otherwise the color will be too bright. The edge should be natural, slightly reddish. You can use pastel crayons, just dust the edge of the paper with a crumb.
Small droplets of water on rose petals will look very nice. To create this effect, you need transparent silicone glue. Make a few drops, distributing them evenly over the surface of the bud. When the glue dries, it will create the effect of dew drops on the petals.
Use sparkles to create shimmering and iridescent roses. Lightly glue the edges of the petals with glue, the center of the bud. Spray glitter over the bud in small portions. When the product dries, turn the bud down and shake a little. Excess sparkles show off downward, the rest will be fixed along the edge of the petals.
How to use paper roses?

You can use paper roses only indoors. When exposed to moisture, the paper begins to deform, and the composition deteriorates.
