For the manufacture of garden furniture, the tree has always been and remains the most popular material. Firstly, each chair or bench made of logs, made independently, is unique and carries a piece of warmth in the hands of the master. Secondly, wood is a natural material, it is very durable and harmoniously combined with any landscape design. In addition, it is environmentally friendly, unlike the same plastic or metal. Therefore, many people prefer to make chairs or benches from a log with their own hands for their garden.
Where to begin?
Garden furniture can be built from logs or planed boards. However, it is worth considering that if you use conifers in the manufacture of a bench from a log with your own hands, then the first thing you need to do is get rid of the remnants of the resin, i.e. tar the wood. This is necessary so that when operating wooden furniture do not stain clothes.
There are several ways to process wood :
- Make an aqueous solution of acetone in a ratio of 4: 1. Using a brush, apply this solution to the wood until completely absorbed, then thoroughly rinse the remaining solution with warm water and dry.
- Similarly, you can remove the resin with a solution of acetone and caustic soda in a ratio of 20: 4.
- You can make a mixture of 6 parts soda ash and 5 parts potash, add water to a creamy consistency. This mixture is necessary to cover the wood in several stages. Before each application, the remaining solution must be washed off with warm water, and the wood should be wiped with a soft brush.
When making a bench from a log with your own hands, you use the most common tools. To get even cuts, you will need a two-handed saw or chainsaw, a rasp and sandpaper to level the surface. To give the necessary shape, you can use a chisel or a chisel.
How to make a bench from logs
Wonderful seats can come from stumps or trimmings of logs. To do this, dig them a little into the ground. If desired, in the stump you can hollow out a recess for sitting, and then it will look like a full-fledged chair or a comfortable chair.
You can also make decorative benches from a log with your own hands. To do this, it is necessary to squeeze the top of the log to a depth of 1/3 of the thickness. At the same time, 150 cm at the edges should be left untouched. Thus, you will get an excellent bench with armrests, which can be installed on several small logs: they, in turn, will play the role of legs. Polezka must be installed in pre-hollowed recesses and nailed with nails.
If you are interested in making a more functional bench from a log with your own hands, you can make it with a back. To do this, the log must be chipped or sawed in half lengthwise, set the legs and run the back of the board, securing it to two vertical racks. For more reliable fastening of racks in a log it is necessary to hollow out small grooves.
