Typewriter Font: Usage, Names, Historical Background

Typewriter-type vintage fonts are now widely used in web design. They give the text elegance and special charm, but of course they are not applicable in all cases.

Historical reference

Before the advent of computer systems, typewriters were used for typing. They were created mainly for copying securities and manuscripts. The typewriter font is not just jagged and a bit blurry. When one of the first inventors of this device, M. Alisov, presented his brainchild, many did not like it, because the characters were standardly even, like from a printing house. This created some difficulties in the collection of documents, it was necessary to censor them. The remaining inventors took this error into account, and the typewriter font became the way we know it now.

Typewriters use the so-called monospace font, which has the same character width. It is believed that it is less readable than the proportional font used in modern printing. But even today it is found in programming when writing source codes, scripts are written with this font. By the way, car numbers are also written in a monospace font.

To save space and reduce the size of the device, many keys were often removed. For example, the numbers were replaced with homographic letters, the hyphen and dash were the same, as were the quotation marks.

Using

For most of the twentieth century, all official government documents were typewritten; publishers also demanded to bring printed texts, as this greatly facilitated the work of typesetters.

What is the name of the typewriter font?

There are currently more than 15 varieties of them for Photoshop. Each font of a typewriter for "Photoshop" imitates either the style of a particular device or writing in different publications (newspapers, printing houses). Many styles are available both in Cyrillic and in Latin. The fountain B52 looks most similar with its large distance between characters and the effect of scuffing. There are other fonts, for example:

  • DS Moster has a rather interesting effect, in which some characters are printed bold. And the letters are not located exactly on the line, but “dance”, making the text very realistic.
  • Underwood completely copies the writing style of the eponymous typewriter.
  • Harting and the 1942 Report look very shabby, as if the paint in the typewriter is starting to end.
  • Junkos Typewriter is very stylized, the letters in it are of different sizes and uneven, there are a lot of “ink stains”.
  • Type Writer, Type wrong and King are more close to a computer or typographic set, they are clear, smooth and without small spots.
