In the beginning of the 20th century, pediatrics was not developed on the territory of present Karelia. This is evidenced by the lack of children's hospitals and specialists for that period. The provision of medical care was carried out by Zemstvo doctors consisting of 24 people. In 13 small hospitals, in which there were a total of 637 beds, there were neither separate wards for children, nor corresponding departments.
The history of the origin and development of pediatrics in Karelia
Since 1927, the first advisory centers began to open. At the same time, infectious and somatic departments were created, which were part of urban and rural hospitals. In the early 30s, the first children's cuisines were organized in Karelia. Since that time, pediatricians began to work. Outpatient services formed rapidly. In 1945-1967, independent children's hospitals were gradually created in the city of Petrozavodsk. They were located in adapted rooms and totaled 80–125 places. It should be said that during this period in the republic there was a rather high infant mortality rate. The administration tried to do everything possible to rectify the situation. So, the Council of Ministers of the KASSR in 1963 decided to create a multidisciplinary large medical institution. Thus began the Republican Children's Hospital of Petrozavodsk. It was designed then for 100 people. The Republican Children's Hospital of Petrozavodsk was located in an administrative building on 33 Frunze Street. Borisova Valentina Aleksandrovna, Honored Doctor not only of Karelia, but also of Russia, was appointed the head of the medical institution .
Modern DRB
Currently, the Republican Children's Hospital of Petrozavodsk is a multidisciplinary, multifunctional hospital with a wide specialization. The institution can accept today at the same time 400 people. The polyclinic of the Children's Republican Hospital (Petrozavodsk) receives 300 patients per shift. The hospital provides planned and emergency medical care for patients from birth to 18 years. Children with acute somatic and surgical diseases and injuries are brought to the hospital around the clock.
Activities
The polyclinic, which is part of a medical institution, simultaneously provides advisory assistance to children of the regions of Karelia. Including it serves 10350 people in the Drevlyanka microdistrict. Due to the convenient schedule of doctors and the affordable cost of diagnosis, most patients can be examined in one day.
The Children's Republican Hospital (Petrozavodsk) serves as the base for the departments of surgery and pediatrics, which are part of the medical faculty of PetrSU. Together with specialized departments, they carry out work aimed at training highly qualified personnel.

Medical staff
The hospital operates 146 doctors, 66% of whom have the highest qualification category. 15 employees have the honorary title "Honored Doctor of the Republic of Karelia". There are 8 candidates of medical sciences. The middle management includes 338 people, 84 of them have the highest qualifications in their specialty. Children's Republican Hospital of Petrozavodsk actively cooperates with medical institutions in Finland, Germany, and the USA. In addition, seminars are regularly held, and active training is being carried out at the workplace. In 2005, the Republican Children's Hospital of Petrozavodsk was recognized as the best institution. For this, the hospital was awarded a diploma of the Government of Karelia. The institution was also awarded a certificate from the Association of Russian Children's Clinics for providing specialized care in a hospital setting.
CDH centers
In January 2006, a republican neonatal complex was founded in the hospital. Help is provided to newborns at high risk. In a specialized institution, they receive modern rehabilitation treatment, intensive care and subsequent qualified supervision. This is one of the largest departments of all, which includes the Republican Children's Hospital (Petrozavodsk). The allergocenter on the basis of the hospital provides planned and emergency care. The department accepts patients with pulmonological pathology. In January 2010, a center for pelvic organ dysfunction began to function. It treats children with pathology of the rectum and colon, inflammatory disorders of the genital organs, juvenile bleeding, malformations and diseases of the urinary tract.
Functions and service areas
The clinic is a large structural unit of DRB and performs two tasks:
- It provides primary health care to children in the Drevlyanka microdistrict.
- Provides specialized advisory and diagnostic assistance to children in 24 areas.
The service territories include the University campus district, the Drevlyanka microdistrict, as well as part of the Perevalka district, which is adjacent to the hospital buildings.
Structure
The structure of the institution includes:
- Administrative part. It consists of the offices of the head, senior nurse, hostess sister.
- Information and analytical service (statistics office, registry, file cabinet).
- Department of treatment and prevention. This includes the offices of a healthy child, community pediatricians, procedures and vaccinations.
- Department of consultation and diagnostics. There are rooms for radiological and other studies. In the same department, diagnostic doctors are admitted.
- Laboratory.
- Department of rehabilitation therapy. There are massage, physiotherapy rooms, an inhalation, halochamber, a specialized room for paraffin and heat therapy, electric sleep, a swimming pool.
