Photo sizes and their dependence on shooting methods

Nowadays, when technology is developing at breakneck speed, when new gadgets are appearing almost every day, striking in their capabilities, making the process of photographing easier and more accessible, photography has become a universal hobby. Today this is perhaps the most affordable and most popular form of art, which literally everyone is fond of, regardless of age, social status, ethnicity, professional preferences and level of technical training.

To take a high-quality photograph, today it is not at all necessary to have an idea of ​​the photographing technique, aperture, shutter speed or photosensitivity - just buy an inexpensive soap dish apparatus or just use a mobile phone camera. All these devices are capable of producing photos, the quality of which is quite enough to display them on the Internet, on social networks, blogs or on your own website. And only when it comes to listing, does the question of size arise.

What are the sizes of photos

The table shows generally accepted size standards. That is, it is practically possible to print any photo from a digital medium - from 5x7 to 84x120 cm. All these photo sizes are standard and available for printing at photo service points. The only question is what resolution do the files from which this printout takes place.

Most so-called soap dishes today allow you to print A4-size photographs without compromising image quality. To do this, it is enough to have a resolution of 240 (preferably 300) dpi, which is provided by a matrix of 8 megapixels or more. The camera resolution is usually indicated on the body next to the lens, and in Photoshop this parameter can be seen if you go to Image> Image Size or press the key combination Ctlr + Alt + I. If the resolution is below 300, then the photo size is better to choose smaller than A4. And, on the contrary, if the resolution is high, then you can afford the large size of the photos.

The Photoshop program demonstrates the relationship between the size of photographs and resolution. If you change the resolution in the bottom line, then the document size also changes inversely. That is, the larger the resolution, the smaller the size of the photographs it is recommended to choose for printing without compromising on quality.

Also important is the choice of material on which the photo will be printed. If the printout of the photo is carried out exclusively for storage in the album, then you can choose any standard paper offered in the photo service. But when it comes to large prints, it is necessary to take into account not only the size of the photos for printing, but also the parameters of the frame, the presence or absence of a mat, whether the photo will be covered with glass or not.

Today, there is a wide selection of materials for large format photography: from plain heavy paper to vinyl glued materials and canvases. Each material dictates specific requirements for the image. Therefore, before opting for a specific material, it is recommended to make a test printout of fragments that are problematic or important from the point of view of information content and artistic idea, since large format printing is an expensive and, by and large, unpredictable business. What will look bright and colorful on thick paper can seem faded and expressionless on the canvas.

Of course, today it is quite possible to do without printing photos. Large family photo albums are a thing of the past, giving way to more practical and modern electronic media. However, according to many experts, it is possible to evaluate the real pros and cons of photo work only by printing it, placing it in a frame, and placing it in the interior. And just for this you need to clearly know what sizes of photographs exist, what are the advantages and disadvantages of various sizes. And only then the photograph will find its real, not virtual life. And it's hard to argue with that.
