What could be simpler than drawing a flower? No one will have any questions about a chamomile or a seven-flower, but drawing a poppy is much more difficult. What do we know about poppies, except that it is red? It is also very tender, with wide neat petals and a firm, firm leg. How to reflect in your drawing all the advantages of this amazing flower and not make it look like an ordinary chamomile? Where to start and how to draw poppies for beginners, we will discuss further in the article.
Mac with a simple pencil
The simplest thing is to make a pencil drawing without shadows and highlights. To draw poppies with a pencil for beginners is not difficult. Even a child can do this, the main thing is to know the basic principles. Before you start drawing, you need to clearly understand how your drawing should look.
First you need:
- A blank sheet of paper.
- Simple pencils of different stiffness.
- Eraser.
On the sheet, you determine the center of the image and get to work. It is important not to rush and make the lines very soft so that they can be easily corrected.
Our flower consists of several parts, each of which try to draw separately. How to draw a poppy? It has petals, which are the largest details in the drawing. There are only four of them, and they can be arranged in different ways.
The middle of the flower can be identified in two ways: by delving into the details, or simply by shaded circles of different diameters, as shown in the figure above.
The stem and leaves have a standard shape and do not require much effort when drawing. Two vertical lines for the stem need not be perfectly straight, a certain error will give your drawing more realism.
Draw and color
Of course, a pencil drawing, even the most realistic one, cannot convey the main highlight of the object - the color. So, poppies have a bright scarlet color and coal-black stamens. But before proceeding with such a drawing, you need to make a pencil sketch - draw the poppies in stages, as shown in the image below.
You can paint a sketch with colored pencils as well as paints. When using pencils, you will need colors such as red, white, black, green and pink:
- Black will serve as a contour to highlight elements of the flower and mark stamens.
- Red and pink will bring clarity to the glare (do not forget that the flower is alive and its colors have the ability to play in the light).
- White highlights the transitions between red and pink.
- Green is the color of the stem, but if we do not draw leaves, then the stem can be left black.
To work with paints is somewhat easier. If it is a soft watercolor, then for the petals it is enough to simply dilute the red paint with water, which will create a soft transition. For the contour, it’s still better to use either a black pencil or a helium pen. But to paint it with black paint is not worth it, it can lead to disaster, and your whole picture will spread on paper.
Draw with paints
The greatest difficulty lies in how to draw a poppy fully, with colored paints. Of course, you can’t do without a pencil at the initial stage. Next comes the coloring process. The palette of colors is very large, and the main colors that you need: red, burgundy, black and green.
Smears can be applied coarse, blending the transitions when using paint a tone lighter or with the addition of water. When painting with paints such as gouache or oil, you need to subtly feel the color, leaving room for shadow and highlights. And to make it easier to colorize, artists pre-outline the elements of shadow and highlight in the drawing.
It is important to do everything in stages, applying the colors of one tone. So, if you are painting a petal, use only shades of burgundy, and proceeding to the stamens and pestles, go to black. Paint is applied from light to dark. It is equally important when choosing paints to choose the right brush.
What are the brushes for painting
But before choosing a brush, you need to decide on the colors, as the brushes for different types of paints are different. If you want to depict a delicate, almost transparent flower with thin, weightless lines that breathes, choose the option for watercolor. If your flower is rough and contour, choose a stiffer brush. All of them vary in shape, size and material.
The most popular - from squirrel wool. It collects water best and is considered the highest quality.
In second place are columns and ponies. They are more resilient and more suitable for drawing small parts.
There are also synthetic brushes. They are the driest and most resilient. Such brushes have different shapes for drawing some separate elements, for example, architectural ones.
But if you are a beginner, then choose the most convenient option - a high-quality round squirrel brush.
Good luck with your work!
