At the moment, the topic of gender is actively discussed in the Russian and international communities and is of great interest. Due to the fact that these questions are new for Russians and residents of the former USSR, confusion is inevitable in them, it is necessary to deal with many definitions that touch on the topic of sexual orientation and gender, which deviates from the traditional one.
This article will attempt to define the concept of gender fluid. This and other forms of gay orientation will also be considered.
The concept
Genderfluid is a gender identity in which a person does not identify with the male or female gender, but periodically feels like a man, then a woman, or a person without a gender, or both sexes at once. Sexologists and psychologists often argue about the accuracy of definitions of various non-traditional sexual orientations.
Gender Fluid Gender Identification
For some people, gender is not just being a man or a woman. Such a type of people as gender fluids can periodically feel like a representative of different sexes after some period of time or even every few hours. So gender fluid - what is it? In simple words - an identity in which a person can periodically feel like a man, and after a while a woman, and so on throughout life.
Translated from English, gender fluid is “sexual variation” when gender expression changes between masculine and feminine and can be reflected in how a person dresses, expresses and describes himself. A progressive gender definition is the norm for some universities in the United States where schools offer gender-neutral bathrooms and latrines, and also allow students to use their preferred names regardless of their passport gender.
Manifestation of gender fluidity
Genderfluidity usually manifests itself as a transitional state between the male and female principles or as a neutral state of a certain “third sex”. A person can feel like a representative of both sexes at the same time, or briefly by any one gender, or something between a man and a woman.
Individuals who identify as gender fluids (as stated above) may experience personality changes regarding gender identification in the long or short term. This condition can last for years, months, days, etc.
One of the main problems associated with the emergence of the concept of gender fluid is the ambiguous or erroneous use of this term. It is usually used as a synonym for concepts such as gender, transgender or polygenders, as well as for criticizing the theory of gender binary (that is, the existence of two sexes) and the idea of gender as a “spectrum”.
Dissemination of the term “gender fluidity”
Scientific studies often emphasize the role of social networks and geosocial applications (Facebook, Twitter, Tinder, etc.) in creating gender-fluid communities and disseminating the term to the masses. The genderfluid entry appeared in the Urban Dictionary in 2007. In the Live Journal, a community of people with this gender appears in 2010.
One of the 56 types of sexes available on Facebook in the options is gender fluid. This value has been used since 2014 along with androgynes and bigendars, however, this option is not available in other languages of this social network. In 2015, Dictionary.com added a term such as genderfluid.
In October 2015, a Spanish-language Género Fluido group was created on Facebook, where people with unstable gender can express themselves and help each other. At the moment, in Russian social networks, you can traditionally choose only two sexes.
Binary gender system
This is a traditional system for classifying gender, which involves two opposite genders (with distinctive physiological characteristics) for understanding the sexual identity of people: male and female.
Binary theory believes that concepts such as "gender", "gender" and "sexuality" are automatically always equivalent to each other. The binary reproductive system is dominant in the modern world and throughout world history.
According to this gender model, both sexes are the opposite of each other. In addition, this model assumes that in all cases of gender classification, with which men and women are usually identified, they are inextricably linked to gender identity and external expression. That is, a person called heterosexual always feels like a person of one gender or another and manifests itself in front of the world with a certain attitude to him and appearance. That is, it corresponds to the classical understanding of the behavior of men and women and their mutual sexual attraction.
Shemale
Despite the binary theory, transsexuals often fit into it. Such people often simply change their passport gender, because they do not feel like a representative of the gender that they were from birth. Staying in their bodies gives them great discomfort, because in their souls they feel like representatives of the other sex, and go to extreme measures to change this fact, for example, change it.
The change consists in using reconstructive surgery and hormonal therapy to change the appearance in accordance with your own sense of self. Transgender people often call this state of affairs a mistake of nature, since their physiology does not coincide with their psychological state.
Based on reliable research by scientists and sexologists in this area, we can say that this is a certain genetic defect that knocks down the sexual identity of a person. One type of similar deviation is gender fluid. The significance of this deviation lies in the variability of sensations of a woman or a man.
Non-binary sex concept
There is also the concept of non-binary sex, which offers a different perspective on the way of understanding the personality and gender of people. A non-binary model involves the separation and separation from each other of certain categories that were once connected. These are concepts such as biological gender, gender identity, and psychological expression. The biological sex has such characteristics as a certain number of chromosomes and the reproductive system of people. The concept of “gender identity” refers to a person’s perception of how he perceives his gender, regardless of whether he feels comfortable with him.
In addition, there is a gender expression in which a person shows his gender to the world through behavior, the way to dress or the choice of hairstyle. It also manifests itself in the communication style that he uses. Transgender people may ask others to call them not their passport name, but invented.
At the moment, there are a huge number of types of sexual orientation and gender, which contradict the classical ideas of man and woman. Genderfluid is also a type of non-binary sexual identification of a person, that is, different from the traditional one.
The non-binary model covers a large number of terms used specifically for sexual definition, which are the result of a combination of the above factors. Gender fluid is a word whose meaning is often combined or confused with other terms.
Genderquire
Genderquire is a term that, in general, covers all concepts that are outside the male or female. Thus, this word can be regarded as a synonym for the category of "non-standard sexes."
However, this is a fairly broad concept, which means that there is no correlation between the biological sex of a person and the gender that he perceives and prefers. The relationship between the accepted gender and its sexual orientation is also not mandatory. Genderquire can be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, etc.
Custom floor classification
The term genderquire usually refers to people who meet any of the following characteristics:
- The androgynous type can combine the simultaneous manifestation of male and female traits.
- Agender is neither a man nor a woman (positioning himself as neutral or asexual).
- Gender fluid is the fluidity (movement) between both sexes.
- Some third genus or identification with some other genus (including those that are simply considered “non-binary” or “strange genera”).
- Gender is a combination or uncertainty about orientation or gender.
A person can have a traditional sexual orientation and gender identity, but express their gender affiliation in a strange way.
The medical aspect of gender fluid
Some critics of gender theory argue that gender, sexual identity, and sexual orientation are the result of social influence. Therefore, many believe that this concept has nothing to do with human nature.
Anne Fausto-Sterling, a biologist, argues that fear of confusion over the existence of different sexes prompted science and medicine to look for criteria that would determine the anatomical gender and psychological gender.
In particular, a human gender fluid is born with the morphological characteristics of a particular biological sex and decides not to become attached to any binary gender (male or female). Thus, gender fluid in this sense of the word is determined not by the presence of sexual characteristics or sexual orientation, but by the existence of personality alternately in both sexes.
Scientific research problems
In 2012, neurologist Vilayanur S. Ramachandran reported the results of a study that involved gender fluids. They suffered from an involuntary alternation between the personality states of a man and a woman. This phenomenon has been described as alternating gender mismatch.
Ramachandran developed the hypothesis that this variation between gender identity is associated with changes in some areas of the brain. It can also correlate with some short body cycles, which are reflected in the sequence of use of its hemispheres. These characteristic periods of change can occur several times a day at the wrong time and can be accompanied by a feeling of having breasts or genitals of the opposite biological sex. At the moment, the results of these studies remain only a hypothesis.
It is important not to confuse gender fluidity with a dissociative identity disorder or multiple personality, since there are differences between these conditions and some characteristics of people with this characteristic.
Stars and gender features
Since this is a recent term, one of the factors influencing its distribution is the growing activity of social networks, as well as statements by recognized personalities, especially in the creative environment, which are considered gender fluids. Recently, the media reported that the 16-year-old Anna-Maria Efremova (daughter of Efremov calls herself on the Mavs social networks) reported that she was “internally” twenty-four years old, she was “gender fluid mevs”, a lesbian (prefers girls).
Western stars also do not lag behind and make outings. Miley Cyrus is another celebrity who also held a position on gender in the media. She stated that she did not want to relate to either the female or male gender. Gradually, many in society already understand what gender fluids are.
