Yezidi wedding - a tribute to traditions

The Yezidi wedding begins in the early morning in the groom’s house with the obligatory invitation of musicians. The wedding ceremony involves the presence of the closest relatives, good friends and long-standing neighbors. At about noon , the groom's confidants head for the bride's house. There, in the middle of the courtyard, the newlywed's parents organize a small table with drinks and dishes.

Mandatory words are pronounced in such cases about the solemnity of a given day. Among the guests there are those women who bring gifts to the bride on the so-called seni (round trays) or in their hands. The Yezidi wedding implies a special attitude to gifts: gifts are most skillfully laid out, they are pre-packed in transparent material and tied with colorful ribbons. The Yezidi wedding provides for at least five trays, but they are required. On one of them there are necessarily a heli (red shawl) and a dress for the bride, in which she will be at the wedding. On the trays are also sweets, bottles of champagne and other gifts. To the cheerful, fervent music, native brides accept gifts and give their gifts to the groom's confidants. Now Yezidi weddings in Moscow are held quite often, and have already ceased to be exotic.

Joint dance “Govand” precedes the departure of the bride from the parental home. But before that, all guests must enter the house. There, with words of gratitude, a display of all the gifts brought to everyone is arranged. Relatives of the bride give the groom a ring, which the bride will soon put on him during the ceremony itself. New Yezidi weddings are held in compliance with all traditions and the obligatory demonstration of the dowry. It is taken away by the trusted groom, then to deliver the young people to the house before the arrival. The dowry mainly consists of bed linen (nevine beech): blankets, mattresses, pillows. Another ceremony before the start of the meal in the bride’s house is symbolic - the binding of two shawls together - the one that was presented by the groom, with the one that the bride already has. The bride and groom remains in them throughout the rest of the ceremony. The total duration of a meal in the bride's house is an average of two to three hours.

The number of ceremonies that take place before the bride leaves the parental home is not limited to this. Two more follow. In the first, the bride’s brother (if there is one, of course) binds and unties the ribbon around her waist three times. The second is the bride’s purchase of pillows by the bridegroom. As soon as the action took place, the bride, finally, can be taken away with a clear conscience and a joyful heart from the threshold of the parental home. At the doorstep of the groom's house, his mother showers the young with sweets, after which the groom rises to a raised platform, laying an apple on his head, a symbol of fertility and reproduction.

While following the house, on their shoulders the newlyweds alternately put lavash - a symbol of family affluence. At the doorstep of the house, the plate should be broken at the same time with the feet of the bride and groom. If the groom succeeds, the boy will be born first, if the bride is a girl. At the wedding feast, men and women sit separately. The Yezidi wedding is dances and songs, and music accompanies the entire ceremony. To observe the traditions, a toastmaster is appointed.
