How to draw fish in watercolor?

A fairly light watercolor painting for beginners can be fish. You can choose various shapes, sizes, colors. Here you have every chance to realize all your fantasies. This article will answer the question of how to draw fish in watercolor.

Fish watercolor.

Preparatory stage

The tools that come in handy to paint fish with watercolors are as follows:

  • Watercolor paper in a suitable format.
  • Pencil for sketching.
  • Eraser.
  • Watercolor.
  • Several brushes of different sizes.
  • Palette or small glass. If you use glass to mix paints, then the resulting color does not have to be applied to the sheet to find out how it will look in work. Simply place the glass over the picture.
  • Water.
  • Wooden tablet or glass.

Sketch

The watercolor drawing of the fish will be located in the center of the sheet. The perspective that we will depict is very successful, because in this way all the details are perfectly visible.

Fish pose

In the lower part of the sheet we draw an oblong drop, which then becomes a body.

From above, near the thin part of the body, draw a wavy and fluffy tail. We finish small fins, gills and eyes.

We erase excess lines and too dark contours with an eraser.

Fill a picture with color

People who have at least once worked with watercolors know that a sheet of paper, when water gets on it, begins to become covered in waves. In order for the paper to retain its original appearance when dried, it must be fixed. Otherwise, your watercolor fish drawing will be damaged.

We draw in the following sequence:

  • First stage. It’s worth starting the drawing with color from the lightest areas, since then it will be difficult to lighten them. We work on the top of the head, lower fin and tail with lemon yellow paint.
  • Second phase. It is necessary to moisten the body of the fish with clean water. On wet small strokes, apply undiluted ultramarine. Gradually increase the saturation of the ink by re-applying the shade.
  • The third stage. You need to mix ultramarine and indigo on the palette, the resulting shade is useful for the tail and fins. Dilute the tone with water and apply to the unpainted parts of the picture. In darker colors, we work on large folds of the tail and veins.
  • The fourth stage. Neutral black draw the eye, abdomen and lower folds of the tail. We finish the eye with olive color.
  • The fifth stage. With a wet brush (preferably soft and round), we wash the bulges on the tail. We do the same with the upper part of the fish body. If you did not work fast enough, then the color will most likely remain in the picture. In this case, the sheet must be moistened in those places where it will be necessary to remove excess color. So washing the color will be easier. You can also use paper towels or, in extreme cases, toilet paper for washing.
  • Sixth stage. Some parts of the body of the fish need to be shaded, so we work out the base of the tail, crown and edge of the lower fin with a pale orange.
The final drawing.
  • Seventh stage. This step is the final one. We need to create a background. Here you can give your imagination a walk. We will add some blue and orange splashes to the finished drawing.

Your watercolor fish drawing is ready.
