Walking around the Internet, you probably have come across the incomprehensible word "demotivators" more than once. Where did this strange term come from, and what are demotivators?
These are pictures accompanied by a satirical, humorous inscription, which are a kind of challenge and destruction of living standards formed by education, traditions and advertising. Demotivators are the exact opposite of motivational posters and carry a comic, and sometimes cruel, meaning.
How did demotivators appear?
The very first demotivator was created by the Americans as a parody of motivational posters, widely distributed in the country with the aim of educating young people and influencing people. Motivational posters, despite the instructive information contained in them, were boring and uninteresting, causing people to only become discouraged and indifferent. But here, as always, lovers intervened to make a joke, having come up with a boring poster a great alternative - posters composed on the same principle, but differing in the emotions that they evoked.
Depending on the pictures and slogans, demotivation posters evoked a gamut of sensations among the audience: sadness, smile, laughter, despair. The idea was accepted by society, and posters became widespread. Particular favor of the people enjoyed funny demotivators. The description of a seemingly innocuous image of a biting humorous inscription began to enjoy success and popularity.
The meaning of demotivation posters
At the moment, the Internet is full of pictures called demotivators. However, not all of them relate to the term under consideration. There are many posters, accompanied by obscene, insulting inscriptions and vulgar images.
Classical, true demotivators carry a deep meaning, a sad irony over an existing situation that cannot be changed ... the bitter truth that everyone knows but does not want to recognize, and not the rude and obscene humor with which our world is already full today. And what are demotivators against the injustices of life? Just irony, sarcasm, hiding deeper feelings.
Categories of demotivation posters
Demotivators are usually divided into several types:
- Comic - positive images with humorous inscriptions designed to evoke laughter in people and cheer up.
- Sad - reflecting light sadness, longing and sadness.
- Internet demotivators. The purpose of these posters is to mock or praise Internet memes.
- Social advertising posters that focus on the social problems of the population in order to attract attention, or make fun of them.

They call for everything good, spread positive and positive emotions, motivate to do good deeds. Motivators are bright, funny images of happy people, animals, beautiful landscapes with the corresponding inscription - appeal.
Their complete opposite is demotivators (the meaning of the word: “motivator” is the prompting to action, “de” is the prefix with the meaning of eliminating the sign). Demotivation posters are pictures in a black frame, at the bottom of which ironic or funny inscriptions are placed. Unlike the bright meaning of motivators, they carry a negative connotation: mockery, sarcasm, cruel irony, black humor. And, oddly enough, they are very popular.
So what are demotivators? Mockery of brutal reality or black humor? Pictures that do not carry a certain semantic load or images that have a deep meaning, indicating a truth that no one sees or simply does not want to see? You decide. The only sad thing is that the classic demotivators are becoming less and less, and they are being replaced by banal or, even worse, obscene posters, absolutely devoid of any sense and logic.
