How to draw eyelashes and eyes

Eyes are a great object for drawing, as they resemble gems. And eyelashes are a protection and decoration of our eyes. However, learning how to draw eyelashes and eyes is not so easy, and in this article we will look at how to do it.

How to draw eyes with eyelashes

There are quite a few ways to portray the eyes, but start with a simpler one.

First of all, draw a barely noticeable horizontal strip that will serve as an auxiliary line. On the right, draw an almond-shaped figure, slightly tilted down. On the left, draw another shape of the same shape and size.

Erase the auxiliary line and draw a circle inside each almond-shaped figure. Between the lower part of the circle and the lower edge of the eye there should be a small space.

Inside each eye, draw the lacrimal canals using an arc. Draw a curved line over the lower eyelid to depict the waterline of the eye.

Now draw round pupils inside the iris and add an arc to indicate the upper eyelid.

Erase the part of the iris that intersects with the upper eyelids and paint over the pupils. Wipe the auxiliary lines lightly and start adding shadows using a pencil. Shade the upper eyelid and pupils and make a faint shadow on the eyes.

Eye painting steps

Add details to the iris in the form of rays emanating from the pupils. Then shade the top of the iris of both eyes.

To make highlights, you need a thin eraser. Erase a small strip on the upper and lower eyelids, above the waterline, behind the tear duct and inside the eye.

After that, you need to draw eyelashes. You need to draw them with thin, but clear, slightly curved lines, drawing them from the upper eyelid up and from the lower eyelid down, with a slight slope to the side. The lower eyelashes should be thinner and shorter than the upper. To add round glare to the eyes, you can use a concealer or white paint.

How to draw upper eyelashes

To draw eyelashes more realistically, we first sketch the eye, and then draw the thickness of the upper eyelid, drawing another line directly below it.

The upper eyelashes look like a curve, which first drops a little down, and then sharply goes up. Practice drawing this curve on a separate piece of paper: press the hard pencil well and start to draw a line from the upper eyelid, slightly lowering it and then sharply pointing up. Try to reduce the pressure on the pencil towards the end of the line. It should be darker at the root and it becomes lighter and thinner at the tip of the eyelash.

Eyelash drawing

Eyelashes, as a rule, are directed upwards from the bend of the upper eyelid and resemble the rays of the sun or wheel spokes. Similarly, the lower eyelashes are directed downward from the lower eyelid. In addition, each eyelash overlaps the next, and they form a kind of bundles.

Draw several pairs of eyelashes that meet at one point. To better understand what eyelashes look like in reality, look at photos of the eyes or look in the mirror.

Now practice drawing eyelashes near the outer corner of the eyelid. In this place they become longer and thicker. Eyelashes from the inside of the eyelid are more rare and thin.

When displaying eyelashes, do not draw them at the same distance from each other, as this looks too unnatural.

Having drawn eyelashes with a pencil with a hard core, point them with a softer pencil, trying to vary the length and thickness of the lines.

How to draw lower eyelashes

To begin, indicate the volume of the lower eyelid. Since it is three-dimensional, you can easily see the lower edge of the eyelid. Draw a second line next to the bottom outline of the eye to show this.

Eyelash drawing

Draw the lower eyelashes with slightly curved lines. They are shorter and less common than the top, so do not press hard on the pencil when drawing them.

Add variety by portraying eyelashes of different lengths and adding lines that blend together.

Advice

When drawing eyelashes, beginners often make some very blunders. For example, to draw eyelashes, they use lines of the same length and thickness, which is not worth doing.

If you want your drawing to look more beautiful and natural, here are some tips:

  • The eyelash looks like an inverted comma. It is thicker at the base and gradually becomes thinner at the end.
  • Do not draw eyelashes in straight lines; they are always slightly curved.
  • The hairs on the inside of the eye are always thinner and shorter than on the outside.
  • Draw several eyelashes growing in the opposite direction to give a realistic look.
