Kazan newspapers: the diversity of the city’s newspaper space

Today, the Internet is the main source of information. There are many digital resources and publications from which the public learns about current news. All this creates an impressive competition with traditional print media. Nevertheless, their release and distribution continues to this day.

Periodicals remain an important element of the information space of the Tatar capital. Their number is one of the most impressive in the country. Almost all of Kazan’s newspapers are published under the leadership of Tatmedia, a republican holding company for mass communication. At present, more than 250 regional and online publications, including magazines, are registered here. They are published in Russian, Tatar, Udmurt and Chuvash languages.

Newspaper Development

Print mass-media

The history of Kazan newspapers begins in 1811. At this time, the first information publication “Kazan Vedomosti” was released. The newspaper was very popular among the townspeople, because it was from it that the inhabitants of the province recognized the important events taking place in their country. The publication has undergone many changes and reorganizations, and in subsequent years it was issued under the name “Kazan Provincial Gazette”.

Throughout the 19th century, numerous attempts were made to create a newspaper in the Tatar language. For the first time, this happened only in 1905, when the Kazan Mohbira was presented to the public, translated as “Kazan Herald”. In the same year, another Tatar newspaper Yoldyz (Zvezda) began to be published. And at the beginning of 1906, a publication appeared with a loud name “Azat” (“Free”).

Modern newspaper setting

Press in Kazan

Kazan newspapers are mainly represented by information and advertising publications. Among the huge advertising space there is very little business press. It is believed that the reason for such an insignificant amount lies in the underdeveloped business mentality of the Tatars and in the refusal of local businessmen to discuss the business problems of the republic.

The most popular newspapers in Kazan are represented by the following publications:

  • "Evening Kazan".
  • "Kazan Fair".
  • "Navigator".
  • "Kommersant Kazan".
  • "Time and money."
  • "ProCity of Kazan".
  • "All in".
  • "Kazan Gazette."
  • "Youth of Tatarstan" and others.

"Evening Kazan"

The socio-political newspaper "Evening Kazan" is one of the most popular not only in the republic, but throughout the country. She confirmed her high status four times, receiving the title of the most circulation newspaper in Russia. The publication is already 35 years old, despite the huge competition in its segment, it continues to remain in demand and beloved by the townspeople. The newspaper is published three times a week.
