History

Tenge got its name from Turkic medieval coins made of silver: “tanga” or “dengue”. It is from them that the very word “money” came from. The modern Kazakh currency continued the ancient history of the cities of Taraz and Otrar. It was in them in the 13th century that coins began to be minted.

The Kazakh currency in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 tenge has dimensions 144 x 69 mm. All bills are made on high quality white paper. The design of banknotes of each type of denomination is different, as well as their color scheme.

Banknotes in denominations of 5000 tenge have a size of 149 x 74 mm. Printed on white paper. The colors are dominated by purple and brown. On the front side is a portrait of the famous philosopher. Watermarks are located to his left . A metallized thread is stretched through the banknote , on which the number 5000 is printed and the inscription "Kazakhstan" is printed. This bill has additional anti-counterfeiting elements.

In 2006, a new-style Kazakh currency came into use. The protection has been improved and the design redesigned. The color palette and the size of banknotes have changed. This allows you to navigate the notes accurately. All banknotes are made in one style. On the front side - a vertical image and horizontal on the back. Baiterek, one of the symbols of Kazakhstan, is placed on the notes.
