Fortuna Dusseldorf is a German football club with a rich history, which has managed to achieve a lot, but at the moment it is far from being in the best condition. Now he plays in the second Bundesliga and does not show his best football, for several years not even claiming to enter the first Bundesliga. But at the same time, “Fortune Dusseldorf” still deserves attention, as it has a large number of fans and impressive achievements in the past.
German Championship
Naturally, the biggest achievement for the club is a victory in the German Championship back in 1933. This is still one of the biggest triumphs of the team, which in 1936 approached the repetition of this success, but stopped just one step from the victory. Fortuna Dusseldorf, however, won other local tournaments. For example, in 1931 she won the West German Championship, and from 1936 to 1940. dominated the Gaulig Niederrein, which she won five times.
If we talk about more modern achievements, then it is worth noting the victory in 1966 in the Western Regional League. In 1989, the team was also able to win the only victory in history in the second Bundesliga, and five years after a sharp decline to win the Oberliga Nordrein. Fortuna Dusseldorf failed to win the Bundesliga not once, and at the moment she is trying her best to win the second Bundesliga again.
German Cup
The football club Fortuna Dusseldorf played a much more effective game in cup tournaments in Germany. It’s worth starting, naturally, with the Cup of West Germany, which existed much less and was not key in the country, but at the same time it was of great importance for football clubs. Fortuna itself won this tournament five times, and three of them in a row (from 1956 to 1958). The club won its last victory in this tournament in 1971.
As for the most important trophy, that is, the German Cup, here the club has not bad successes. In 1937, for the first time in history, he reached the final of the tournament. After that, he reached the final match three more times, but always lost. The same thing happened in 1978, when the team again lost in the final. And only in 1979, Fortune managed to win the German Cup for the first time. Surprisingly, after a year the team repeated its success and won the Cup for the second time in a row. Thus, if Fortuna had not lost in the finals in 1978, it could have had three victories in the German Cup in a row. But two victories are an impressive result. Unfortunately, after this the team did not achieve much success in the tournament.
Eurocups
It would seem that this is not “Bavaria” and not “Borussia” from Dortmund, so it makes no sense to even start talking about Eurocups. But in reality, "Fortune" quite successfully performed at the international level. She first succeeded in 1967 by winning the Intertoto Cup. In 1979, there was an application for a very high-profile victory when the club reached the final of the cup winners, but there they lost to the Catalan Barcelona. However, in 1984, Fortune managed to win the Intertoto Cup again, and two years later the third trophy went to the club’s museum. Thus, “Fortune”, although it did not win the Champions League or the UEFA Cup, but still managed to achieve good success in the European arena.
What now?
If we consider “Fortuna” as a modern club, then the results of the team are not so impressive. At the beginning of the century, the team still played in the Regional League, in 2002 it generally flew to the minor league, returning to the Regional only in 2004. But by 2009, she was able to get into the second Bundesliga, in which she spent three years, after which she took third place and reached the first Bundesliga. But there the club lasted only one season, taking 17th place and returning to the second Bundesliga.
Fortuna finished last season in 11th place, but this season it surprised everyone. At the moment she takes a confident first place and wins even in the most difficult matches, such as Fortuna Dusseldorf - Duisburg. What about the German Cup? In 2012 and 2013, the team managed to reach the 1/8 finals, but not this season. Already in the second round in the match “Fortuna Dusseldorf” - “Borussia Mönchengladbach” the club left the tournament, losing with the score 0: 1. But now the team can focus on the championship, because it has the most real chance to get into the first Bundesliga again, but this time try to stay there for a longer period of time.
