The Torpedo Taganrog Stadium, commissioned in 1955, although it is not located in the very center of this one of the most important cities in the Rostov Region, is still the center of Taganrog's sports life.
Torpedo - the main stadium
It is located (in the photo a football match at Torpedo before reconstruction) on the outskirts, within walking distance from the coast of the Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov. Since the opening, the stadium has been home to one of the oldest teams in southern Russia - Torpedo. Now it is called "Taganrog" and acts in the "South" zone of the second division of the championship of Russia.
We saw here not only the first love of the city - football, but also the second - rugby. The local Bulava (formerly Rainbow), now housed in the Rainbow Stadium, used to host its matches of Soviet and Russian championships. Training base?
The 2018 FIFA World Cup made it possible for Torpedo to transform (the photo shows the layout of the stadium after reconstruction). When it became known that the “capital” Rostov-on-Don will host the matches of the championship, a question arose about the location of the national teams near the Rostov-Arena stadium, that is, within the Rostov region. Taganrog with the Torpedo stadium and the Temerinda hotel located in the city center, which has 32 standard rooms and 15 suites , was added to the list of five facilities preparing to become training facilities for the guest teams .
In preparation for the World Cup, a global reconstruction of the Torpedo stadium was carried out. If earlier it was reconstructed in stages (in 2006 plastic seats appeared, in 2008 the Western tribune received a roof and rebuilding, repair of the stands, in 2012 there was artificial cover on the training field), then in 2017 almost everything was reconstructed: both stands, a new natural football pitch was laid on the field, a modern scoreboard appeared, new communications were updated or established. 322 million rubles were spent on everything from budgets of all levels.
Unfortunately, there were some problems. As far back as January 2017, not a single contractor entered the competition for the execution of the necessary works on the reconstruction of the Torpedo stadium (Taganrog). A situation close to this happened in Rostov (the Trud stadium) and Azov (the Lakomtsev stadium), which forced the Russian sports authorities to announce that the Rostov region had become “leaders” behind the schedule (four months) of the work among all subjects RF, which will receive guests of the world championship.
However, the leadership of the Rostov region and the city of Taganrog managed to overcome difficulties. In the summer of 2017, it was even announced that the schedule was ahead of schedule, but technical delays now reappeared, which, however, did not prevent the Torpedo stadium from being delivered on time - by February 2018.
In total, Russia prepared sixty-six such training bases for the World Cup. It only remained to wait for the selection of participating teams.
Problems
To be honest, Taganrog initially had few chances to receive guests. The main and practically unsolvable problem is the lack of an international airport. And he should be at a distance of no more than one hour and twenty minutes (according to the requirements of the International Football Federation). It was possible, of course, to adapt the airfield of the local aircraft factory, but this would hardly have been feasible.
