Polypropylene yarns: properties and main characteristics

The development of modern technologies has led to the creation of such progressive materials, without which it is already difficult to imagine our life. These include polypropylene yarns, which are especially widely used in the fishing and textile industries.

polypropylene threads

Description

Such threads are twisted polymer fibers with high strength and durability. The production process is quite complicated. Polypropylene is melted by adding the necessary components that improve the properties of the finished product, and form a film from it, which is cut into strips. The resulting material is wound on special bobbins or spools in a cross way, making the thread much easier to slip without tangling or clinging.

Polypropylene yarn properties

The high demand for this material is due to the large number of its advantages, compared with similar ones with ordinary threads. Polypropylene yarns are characterized by increased strength, elasticity and minimal bulk density. They are resistant to abrasion, repeated bending, do not undergo decay processes, have high resistance to detergents, hot water, and also have antistatic properties. An important fact is that polymer threads are an environmentally friendly material, therefore they do not require any special precautions when working with them. And products from them can safely come into contact with food products.

Due to chemical inertness, these threads are not able to break down over time. They do not fade, but after manufacturing it is already impossible to color them. The pigment is added to polypropylene even before the start of film production.

Polypropylene threads must comply with GOST. The mass of produced bobbins averages 5 kilograms, and the density of winding in them ranges from 550 to 3500 tex. The strength of the threads (the ability to resist fracture under load) is measured in KGS (kilogram of force) and is 1.4–21 KGS.

Fibrillated thread

This is a thread that is made by the method of longitudinal splitting (fibrillation). After the formed polymer films are cut into strips (their width is not more than 100 mm), they are split using a special device in the form of a needle roller. For this, longitudinal scratches on the surface of the film are made with its help.

After that, the strips are pulled in such a way that their length becomes 4–10 times longer, and heat treatment is carried out on the pulling rollers in a special chamber where the film melts at high temperature and as a result is pulled. This forms a polypropylene flat thread (or fibrillated).

Multifilament thread

A feature of the production of these threads is the use of special additives, as a result of which the material obtained is made very resistant to ultraviolet rays. Multifilament yarns are used for the manufacture of such products, which should be especially resistant to any weather conditions, exposure to chemicals, etc.

Application

The range of use of this material is extremely wide. Polypropylene yarns, due to their versatility, are used in a wide variety of industries. In agriculture, they serve to bundle sheaves and tie plants. In fishing, they are used for the manufacture of nets; in light industry, the manufacture of carpets and many household items is not without this material. Threads in the medical industry and in cosmetology are in great demand. Resistant to fading and detergents, a polypropylene thread is used for washcloths, rugs and colorful handbags that knit the skillful hands of modern craftswomen.
