Jupp Heynckes is a popular German footballer and coach. He played in the position of striker, famous for playing in the Mönchengladbach Borussia and the national team. As a mentor, he won the Champions League, the championship and the German Cup twice. Officially completed his coaching career in 2018.
Gaming career
Jupp Heynckes was born in Mönchengladbach in 1945. He played in the youth teams "GrĂŒn-Weiss" and the Mönchengladbach "Borussia". His real name is Joseph Heynckes, but he is known to everyone under the name Jupp.
He made his debut as an adult in 1964. The very next year, he began to play in the Bundesliga, immediately taking 13th place. In 1966, his club showed a significantly better result, finishing in eighth place.
After this season, Jupp Heynckes moved to Hannover 96 for three years. The highest achievement in this club was the tenth place in the Bundesliga, with the team constantly playing in the Fairs Cup, an analogue of the UEFA Cup.
In 1970, Jupp Hainekes returned to Borussia, speaking in this team before the end of his professional career.
Champion title
In 1971, the hero of our article, together with Borussia, won the German championship. For the club, this was the second such title in a row. Outstanding players of that time performed with him: Herbert Wimmer, Gunter Netzer, Borty Vogts, Allan Simonsen, Wolfgang Kleff.

The Golden Decade
After that, the club experienced some decline. In the 1972/73 season, the team finished fifth. Then she won silver medals, simultaneously brilliantly speaking in the UEFA Cup. âBorussiaâ began the fight from the 1/32 finals in a confrontation with the Austrian âWackerâ. The Germans lost 1: 2 away, but in the return match they did not leave the Austrians any chance, defeating them 3-0.
In the next stage, âBorussiaâ confidently passed the French âLyonâ (1: 0 and 5: 2), in the 1/8 finals, she simply swept the Spanish âZaragozaâ. Victory at home 5: 0 and 4: 2 away. In the quarter finals, the Czech âBanikâ tried to confront the Mehengladbakhs. âBorussiaâ won 1-0 away, and then at home - 3-1. In the semifinals, the rivals went to âCologneâ, which was beaten twice - 3: 1 and 1: 0.
In the UEFA Cup final, the team had to play against the Dutch âTwenteâ. The first match in Germany unexpectedly ended in a goalless draw. In the Netherlands, the Germans finally demonstrated what they are capable of. Already in the second minute the score was opened by Danish forward of âBorussiaâ Allan Simonsen. In the 9th minute, Jupp Heynckes scores against an opponentâs goal. In the second half, he draws a hat-three, after which the score becomes 0: 4. In the end, the Dutch manage to play at least one ball. The goal is recorded at Epi Drost. The point in the game is Simonsen, who scores from the penalty spot after 86 minutes. The result is 5: 1. There were a lot of goals for Jupp Heinex in this tournament, with ten goals he became the top scorer of the tournament.
Return to Olympus
In 1975, Borussia again managed to win the league title. Moreover, the team wins with a clear advantage, ahead of the closest pursuer, Berlin âHerthaâ, by 6 points. Footballer Jupp Heynckes becomes the Bundesliga's top scorer with 27 goals.
Having a chance to play in the European Champions Cup, the Germans again get the Austrian âWackerâ as rivals. After a draw in the home match (1: 1) away they defeat opponents with a score of 6: 1. In the second round, they succeed in knocking out the Italian Juventus, beating 2-0 at home, and ending the away match 2-2.
In the quarterfinals on the way, âBorussiaâ was Real Madrid. In the home game, the Germans quickly advanced 2-0, but could not hold a solid advantage, the game ended in a draw. Two weeks later, at the âSantiago Bernabeuâ Hainkes opened the scoring in the middle of the first half, but in the second half of the meeting Santillan scored a return goal, the Spaniards went further thanks to the large number of goals scored away.
In 1976, the team of Jupp Gainkes (who also often translate his name into Russian) won the second championship title in a row. This time, 4 points managed to get ahead of âHamburgâ.
In the European Cup, âBorussiaâ started with a guest defeat from the Austrian âAustriaâ 0: 1. She confidently won 3-0 at home, went to the second round. There, the rivals went to the Italian âTorinoâ (a 2-1 away victory and a goalless draw at home). In the quarter finals, âBorussiaâ beat the Belgian âBruggeâ (2: 2 and 1: 0), and in the semifinals - Kiev âDynamoâ (0: 1 and 2: 0).
In the final, as several years ago in the UEFA Cup, the Mönchengladbach met with the English âLiverpoolâ. In the first half, the score was opened by the Englishman McDermott. At the beginning of the second half of the meeting, Simonsen scored a goal in response, but after 12 minutes Smith again brought forward âLiverpoolâ. The ending turned out to be tense, Heynckes had a few moments for scoring, but could not realize them. Instead of leveling the score, âBorussiaâ on 82 minutes received a penalty in their own goal, which was realized by Phil Neil. To win the European trophy failed.
In 1977, Borussia won the German championship for the fifth time in its history in a bitter struggle. Only at the finish she manages to get around Eintracht from Braunschweig and Schalke 04 by 1 point.
In the European Cup, the team confidently passes the Hungarian âVashashâ (3: 0, 1: 1), the Yugoslav âCrvena Starâ (3: 0, 5: 1), the Austrian âWackerâ (1: 3, 2: 0). In the semifinals, he again encounters the formidable English Liverpool at that time. At home, the Germans win 2-1, but after a crushing defeat at Anfield Road 0-3 are eliminated from the competition.
In the last season in the âBorussiaâ Heynckes could not help the team win another championship title. In a bitter struggle, she lost the trophy to Cologne. The most offensive thing is that the teams had equal points, all decided to face-to-face meetings. If in Cologne the teams split 1: 1, then in Mönchengladbach âBorussiaâ suffered a crushing defeat 2: 5.
In 1979, without Heynckes, the club won the UEFA Cup. In total for âBorussiaâ the hero of our article played 308 matches, scoring 218 goals.
Career in the national team
In the German national team, Heynckes made his debut in 1967. For nine years he was one of the players in the main team of the great team of Helmut Shen. Together with Sepp Mayer, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, Netzer, Breitner shone at the largest world and European tournaments.
In 1972, Heinkes went to the European Championship in Belgium. Only four teams participated in the final tournament, so the fight began immediately from the semi-final stage. The Germans in the rivals got the hosts of the tournament. Thanks to two goals of Gerd Muller, the Germans won 2: 1.

After this triumph, the Germans went to the world championship in the rank of one of the favorites, since they won bronze medals at the previous world championship.
In the group stage, the German national team confidently outplayed Chile with a score of 1: 0 and Australia (3: 0). In the match for first place in the group, Heynckes' team lost in the bitter struggle of the GDR, having conceded the only goal in the game a quarter of an hour before the end of the match.
According to the rules of that tournament, both teams went to the second group round. In the first match, the Germans defeated the Yugoslavs 3-0, then in a difficult meeting they beat the Swedes (4: 2) and the Poles (1: 0). Taking first place in the group, the team went to the finals.
In the decisive match with the Dutch, the Germans were discouraged by a goal conceded already in the second minute from the penalty spot. But Shen's wards quickly came to their senses. At the 25th minute Paul Breitner equalized the score from the 11-meter mark, and just before the break Gerd MĂŒller scored the second goal. This was the second world title in the history of the German national team.
Jupp Heynckes in Germany spent 30 matches for the national team and scored 14 goals. He completed his performance in the national team in 1976.
Coaching career
Jupp Heynckes became a coach a year after the official completion of his sports career. For eight years he coached Borussia, replacing Udo Lattek as a mentor. By then, the best years for this club had already passed. The stars with which Borussia won one league title after another are gone. The players who replaced them were not so talented.
But Heynckes managed to create a combat-ready squad that won bronze medals twice and reached the final of the country's cup. At that time, in the Bundesliga out of competition was Munich âBavariaâ.

Foreign career
In 1992, he decided to try his hand at the Spanish Championship. At first he ended up in the modest Athletics from Bilbao, with whom he did not show any outstanding results in two years. He returned to the Bundesliga in âEintrachtâ from Frankfurt, the classic middle peasant of the highest echelon of German football.
After that he reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup with the Spanish âTenerifeâ, where the modest club lost only to Schalke 04, knocking out the formidable Lazio and Feyenoord during the tournament.
In 1997, he was invited to work at Real Madrid. Under his leadership, the team won the Champions League in 1998. In the final, with a score 1: 0 Turin âJuventusâ was beaten, thanks to a goal by Miyatovich in the middle of the second half.
Having achieved success in Europe, in the domestic championship Heynckes with âRealâ could not even win medals, not to mention the fight for the league title. The team took only fourth place. This was regarded as a failure, with the German specialist parted.
Career decline
After this, Hainkes began to pursue failure. With the âBenficaâ in the championship of Portugal, he managed to win only bronze medals. He then coached Athletic from Bilbao and Schalke from Gelsenkirchen with varying success.
In the spring of 2006, he returned to his native Borussia. But with him, the team showed such disgusting results that Heinkes resigned without working for a year. At the end of the season, she flew out of the Bundesliga.
In 2009, after the dismissal of JĂŒrgen Klinsmann from Bavaria, he took his place. The leadership set a specific task for him: to win the championship. Fail to fulfill it, âBayernâ lost two points to âWolfsburgâ. After that, he signed a contract with the Leverkusen Bayer, with whom he became vice champion of the Bundesliga in 2011.
Soon he was returned to Bavaria. Four rounds before the finish, the Munich team lose to their main rival in the fight for the championship, the Dortmund Borussia, after which they almost lose the chance of gold medals.
In the final of the German Cup, âBayernâ suffers a crushing defeat all from the same âBorussiaâ 2: 5. In the Champions League, Bayern play very brightly. In the 1/8 finals, the Swiss Basel 7-0 defeats at home, before losing 0-1 on the road. In the quarter finals with the same score 2: 0 twice defeats the Marseille âOlympicâ.
In the semifinals, Bayern Munich exchanges victories with Real Madrid with the same score 2: 1. In the end, everything is decided in a penalty shootout at the âSantiago Bernabeuâ. Manuel Neuer works wonders, the Germans win 3: 1.
In the final, Bayern play with the English Chelsea. Enormous attention is riveted to the game, because the finals are held in Munich. At 83 minutes, Thomas MĂŒller scores a goal, but the British manage to recoup two minutes before the final whistle. In the penalty shootout, Spaniard Mata, who plays for Chelsea, immediately misses. âBayernâ comes forward, but after accurate hits by Lama, Gomez and Neuer Olic and Schweinsteiger do not score two penalties in a row, Chelsea win the Champions League. The Munich team that season failed to win a single title.
But the 2012/13 season is outstanding. Bayern wins in all tournaments in which it participated: in the championship, cup and German Super Cup. In the final of the Champions League defeated Dortmund âBorussiaâ - 2: 1.
In early summer 2013, Heynckes announces the completion of his coaching career. In December, he was recognized as the best coach of the year in the world.
In October 2017, unexpectedly for many, the hero of our article returned to Bavaria, replacing Carlo Ancelotti in his post. The contract, calculated before the end of the season, Heynkes fulfilled âexcellentâ, leading the team to the next champion title. The closest pursuer, âSchalke 04â managed to get ahead by 21 points.
Personal life
The wife of the hero of our article is called Iris. They are raising a daughter Curtis. Jupp loves his wife so much that when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2004, he abandoned football for a year and a half to be with her. At that time, he even refused to lead the German national team.
Moreover, he is a true friend. When the president of Bavaria, Uli Henness went to jail, Jupp Heynckes said that he was not going to interrupt communication with him, despite accusations of tax evasion.
When Henness was released, he was one of the first to meet him. The footballer constantly supported his friend while he was in prison. Jupp Heynckes is already 73 years old. He states that he wants to live quietly in retirement.
