The egui.exe service: what is this process, why is it loading system resources, and how to reduce the load?

From users who monitor the performance of their computer system, quite often you can hear complaints about the constantly active and running in the background egui.exe service. Not everyone knows what this process is, and some even mistake it for some kind of viral applet. Indeed, in the "Task Manager", not to mention the startup section of applets and applications that start with the operating system, there is such a component, and there is practically no way to disable it. However, this is neither a virus, nor a system service. Then what then?

Service egui.exe: what is this process?

In general, it’s worth immediately reassuring all users about the dubious origin of this executable applet. It is an integral component of all antiviruses from ESET, including NOD32, Smart Security, and Internet Security. But this is not an antivirus start executable file. Actually, to understand what it is, egui.exe needs to be considered in terms of decoding the abbreviation in the name.

ESET Internet Security Antivirus

A GUI refers to objects that are responsible for the appearance of certain software. That is, roughly speaking, this service is responsible for the launch and operation of the graphical interface of the entire software package, and it starts, as already understood, on its own when Windows boots. In a sense, this process can be called a kind of analogue of the explorer.exe service in Windows (not to be confused with Explorer), which ensures the correct display of all the graphical components of the system. Only in this case does this apply specifically to the antivirus.

Why does egui.exe load the processor?

However, this was a general description. Now a few more words about the egui.exe service. What kind of process this is, I think, is a little understandable, but a little more should be left on why it can cause an unreasonably high load on the processor and memory consumption. Alas, unequivocally even experts in the field of using and configuring ESET antivirus software products cannot answer this question. However, quite often we can assume that this phenomenon is associated with a situation when an anti-virus database is updated or a computer scan is started in the background (for example, when idle). And the load, if you take a closer look, does not come from this process, but from related components, the name of which may also contain the abbreviation egui (in addition, most of them also have an executable EXE format).

How to reduce the load with the simplest settings?

As for reducing the load, in the simplest case, just try to activate the suspension of protection by selecting the appropriate item from the menu that is called via RMB on the antivirus icon in the system tray.

Pausing protection and disabling the firewall

On the other hand, if an anti-virus database is currently being updated, this will not lead to anything (even if the Internet is turned off, the program will still try to access the necessary resource). So what then to do?

Actions with additional parameters

And there is no clear answer to this question. Most likely, in order to reduce the load from the component egui.exe and its accompanying elements, one will have to experiment with the parameters of the main security application.

Disabling in game mode antivirus

First of all, pay attention to the game mode activation point. It should be completely disabled. In older versions, you may need to enter just these settings and deactivate all the items that may be present there. You can also try to disable automatic protection in real time, but, I think, this is not the best solution.

Additional ESET antivirus settings

In addition, you can delve into the settings related, for example, to perform a scan of removable devices or opened files.

If you want to disable the component completely and completely, it will be impossible to do this at startup. At best, you can go into the registry and find two Run folders there, but only those that have RunOnce directories next to them. In the Run sections, you can either set the auto start value to zero, or delete keys in general. But keep in mind that after this the start of the antivirus will become impossible at all. It is also possible that after such manipulations it will be necessary to completely remove or reinstall it.

Disabling antivirus startup

However, you can disable the launch of the antivirus in special optimizer programs like Advanced SystemCare or CCleaner. But the appropriateness of such actions raises legitimate doubts.

Brief summary

This is all about the egui executable antivirus component. What is this process, sorted out. As for its complete shutdown so that the service does not start with the system, such a need can arise only in one case - when you want to remove the antivirus using regular Windows tools. In all other cases, it is better not to engage in such actions.
