General information
Arriving in Vologda, first of all, tourists visit the Vologda Kremlin , which is the main attraction of the city. Its history dates back to the time of John the Terrible. It was by his order that it began to be built in the 16th century.
Today, unfortunately, the defensive walls have not been preserved. Here you can see only the elevations of the stone foundations and traces of the ramparts.
The buildings, which are now the main attraction of Vologda, have been built for several centuries. Their differences in style and image are also connected with this, but the Kremlin ensemble is harmonious. All the buildings in the fortress, once the residence of the Vologda bishops, were wooden. They were rebuilt several times, but to this day have not survived. And it is known about them only by some documents.
Short story
How did the Kremlin Square of Vologda appear? In April 1566 (the day of the Holy Apostles Sosipatra and Jason), by order of John IV the Terrible, the construction of a defensive fortification, named after the construction of Nason-city, was begun. Over the years, large volumes of work have been carried out - embankments, ramparts, ditches. Accurate data on the author of the Kremlin today has not been preserved. Some sources speak of the Englishman Humphrey Locke, and some speak of Russian, the Meaning of Petrov.
Initially, it was planned to make the royal residence from the Kremlin complex (an area 2 times larger than the Moscow one), but after 15 years the construction of the fortress ceased due to the unexpected departure of John from the city. After some time, construction resumed again.
Initially, the pavement in the square was wooden. By the 800th anniversary of the city, in 1947, it was updated and became stone. A lawn was set up in the center, and both boulevards were reconstructed. The bridge was covered with asphalt in 1957. By 1960, for the anniversary industry exhibition of the whole region, a glass pavilion “Engineering and Transport” was built near the church of A. Nevsky, but it was soon dismantled.
In the mid-70s of the XX century, the movement of vehicles through the Kremlin Square of Vologda was blocked. From 2006 to 2007, the area was reconstructed. The territory was tiled, and the central lawn with fir trees was cleaned. The area has become completely pedestrian.
sights
The former Kremlin ensemble, the Resurrection and St. Sophia Cathedrals, the bell tower of the cathedral, the temple of A. Nevsky, the monument to Batyushkov K. N., the lace museum, etc. are located on Vologda Kremlin Square.
Below is a more detailed description of some of them.
Sophia Cathedral
This is a beautiful monument of architecture of the Kremlin Square in Vologda (see photo in the article) dates back to the XII century. The dimensions of the magnificent temple are impressive - the length of the walls is 38.5 meters, the width is 25.6 meters, the height is 59 meters (the house is almost 20 floors). St. Sophia Cathedral is similar to Ouspensky, built earlier in Moscow, so it has a style typical of Russian architecture of those times.
The temple for a long time (17 years) after the departure of Ivan the Terrible remained uninitiated and unwritten. By the way, there is a funny legend about the unexpected departure of the king from the city. It says that a stone fell on a king who visited the temple before his consecration, which caused his rage and removal from the city. It is a fact that this cathedral was partially decorated already during the reign of Fyodor Ivanovich, and a hundred years later murals were created.
The unusualness of the cathedral complex lies in the fact that, despite the canon of the church, according to which the altar should face east, the church faces north-east. This was done at the behest of the ruler.
Today the complex works like a museum.
Resurrection Cathedral
This temple, located on the Kremlin square of Vologda, today housed an art gallery formed in 1952. The cathedral is mentioned from the time of Joseph Golden, however, the construction was completed after the death of the bishop.
The gallery stores over 20,000 different exhibits. Here are paintings, graphics, arts and crafts of various stages of development. There are works by both the best artists of the Vologda region and Western European masters.
Kremlin Belfry
A wonderful panorama of the city opens from the observation deck of the bell tower, but to get there, you must overcome 300 steps. The chimes, representing the main attraction, are located on this building. They were made in 1871 and are still the main city clock.
The bell tower itself was built in 1654-1659, but in 1869, by order of Bishop Palladius, it was rebuilt. On its base was built a bell tower with lancet openings for bells.
