Yaroslavl region is the average largest territorial unit of the Russian Federation. As of the beginning of this year, the population was 1265247 people. 82.6% of the total population lives in urban conditions. The region includes 11 cities.
The natural population decline last year increased when compared with 2016. However, migration growth compensated for this indicator, it equals 15.3%.
Yaroslavl region is a lot of monuments and historical places. In total, there are about 5 thousand valuable objects in the region, some of which are listed as protected by UNESCO. Most of the architectural monuments were erected from the 15th to the 16th centuries.
Administrative center
The largest city in the population of Yaroslavl Oblast is Yaroslavl. According to the Federal State Statistics Service, as of January 1, 2017, 608,079 people live in the village. This is one of the oldest cities in the country, founded in the XI century, the heyday of the XVII century. It is located in the East European part of the country on both banks of the Volga River.
Most of the population of the city is represented by Russians, but there are also about 120 other nationalities. The city is divided into 6 urban areas.
Settlements with a population of more than 100 thousand
In this list of cities of the Yaroslavl region, in addition to the administrative center, only one is included - Rybinsk. 190,429 people live here. The city itself is also very ancient, the official foundation date is 1071 (the first mention of the year 826), but received the status of an urban settlement only in 1777.
Regrettably, the population in the city is decreasing, last year this indicator was at the level of 4477 people, of which the natural decrease was 1390. It turns out that the townspeople are moving around the country and the world in search of a better life.
Settlements with a population of more than 10 thousand
Cities included in the Yaroslavl region, where at least 10,000 people live:

Pereslavl-Zalesky, like Tutaev, is the most famous and visited city of the Yaroslavl region, because they are included in the Golden Ring of the Russian Federation. Only in 2009, 292.6 thousand people visited Pereslavl-Zalesky, 2% of whom were foreign nationals.
In the city of Tutaev over the past year, there was an increase in population, compared with the previous period, the number of citizens increased by 37 people. The same picture is observed in Rostov, the number of inhabitants increased by 96 people.
Which city of the Yaroslavl region was the first? This is Rostov. It is mentioned in the annals of 862. And Yaroslavl was founded only in 1010, which was built by Yaroslav the Wise.
Small settlements
This list of cities of the Yaroslavl region includes only 3 cities:
- Poshekhonye - 5867.
- Myshkin - 5738.
- We love - 5125.
The city of Beloved was built back in 1538, in order to protect the population from raids by the Tatar Cossacks. In the first half of the 19th century, there were only 6 stone houses in the village. But by the beginning of the last century, more than 3 thousand people live in the village, schools and hospitals appear, industry and infrastructure are developing.
Regarding the origin of the name of the city Myshkin, there are several versions. However, thanks to the efforts of the local historian Grechukhin V., the village returned its historical name in Soviet times. Since 1990, the city has been a tourist center, hosting about 140 thousand tourists annually. The symbol of the city of Myshkin is the mouse, in honor of which a whole museum has been opened.
Demographic disaster
The population of the Yaroslavl region in cities and villages is steadily declining. The worst situation in rural areas, people travel to larger settlements. Compensation of the population is due to migrants. People come to the region from Uzbekistan, Georgia and Ukraine. I would like to believe that in the near future the situation will change, that is, the influx of population will occur due to fertility.
