All-in - what is it? Origin, meaning, synonyms and interpretation

Often, when there is a game for money, people in a critical situation say: "I'm going all-in." This means that they are ready to play for anything. But where did the expression come from? Where are its roots? Today we will find out, as well as its meaning and synonyms. And everything will be exactly as in a pharmacy.

Origin

The Eiffel Tower

You know, there is one very persistent association for those who watched the cartoon "Gray Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood" (1990) many times. The word "France" recalls two images - the Eiffel Tower and the voice of Edith Piaf. And we hope the reader too. Therefore, while he listens to the Piaf song in his head, let’s say that the expression considered today came to us from France. It is unnecessary to speak of close linguistic ties between Russia and France. Therefore, the French origin of our hero is not surprising. The etymological dictionary claims that all-in is borrowing from French, the exact time is not indicated, but it says: the translation means "go to the whole bank." In other words, put everything that is.

Therefore, it is not surprising that in game sports you can hear such suggestions:

  • The coach goes all-in.
  • The team removes the defensive midfielder and releases the striker - is this an all-in game?
  • There is nothing left but to release an extra player and play all-in because the gates are already empty.

There are other examples, but we will save them until the next section.

Value

Cards on the table

So, without much haste, we got to the meaning of the word β€œall-in”. Now, of course, we need not an etymological, but an explanatory dictionary. Let's see what is in it: β€œIn card games: for all the money in the bank.” Moreover, the last noun is interpreted as "staked money". That is, if the reader imagined the building where they put money at interest, then this is in vain.

The explanatory dictionary does not miss a figurative meaning: "At the risk of all." If we talk about the previous examples, then they just use the figurative meaning. After all, there are no cards on the football and hockey fields, but the game is on, and sometimes in a big way.

By the way, thanks to the figurative meaning, the expression came out from the card tables and went for a walk around the world, but still it is only where there is a risk.

Almost indispensable concept

Usually we consult with a dictionary, select the best replacements for the reader, and this is where our mission ends in this sense. But this is not the case today, because the dictionary gives us almost no options other than "to the end." Therefore, we will have to accept our lot and slightly upset the reader. If synonyms for β€œall-in” are necessary, then you will have to convey the meaning of the concept either allegorically, or use the only phrase that is given here. But, really, if you expand and think about replacing the phrase β€œgo all-in”, then there may be options:

  • Climb into the loop.
  • Climb the rampage.

Yes, it’s clear that quite a bit. Well, as they say, what is rich ...

Why can't the last cartridge be used for nothing?

Mouth-watering bundles of money

This is an easy question. Because the last cartridge is the only one, which means it is for the most extreme case. You can’t, for example, go all-in at the beginning of the game - this is unnatural, what's the point of taking risks at the very beginning? Only when there is nothing more to lose, the time comes for decisive and desperate action. And before that, you can wait. Only one thing really needs to be remembered well: one cannot imagine the object of research without risk, and, accordingly, if there is no danger to lose anything, then talking about all-in is silly and unjustified. Such behavior gives pose and hypocrisy. For example, a student may go all-in for the exam, but a person who chooses cucumbers and tomatoes in the market is unlikely. The use of an adverb is appropriate when there is at least minimal risk in the situation. And remember: the jackpot and all-in are the concepts that usually go together.
