Petrenko Sergey is a famous Soviet and Russian hockey player. He won at the Olympic Games and the World Cup, has the titles of champion of the USSR and Russia. With different teams he won many national and international cups. After completing a career in the Hammer-Prikamye team, he switched to coaching.

The beginning of a sports career

Petrenko Sergey Anatolyevich was born in September 1968 in one of the largest cities of Ukraine - Kharkov. He got his first ice hockey skills right here, in the section at the school of physical education.

In 1985, the 17-year-old Petrenko was credited to the local Dynamo, which played in the first division of the USSR championship. In the first season, the young left-handed striker played 44 matches for his club with very good indicators for his age - 8 goals and 14 assists.

Coaches of Dynamo Moscow drew attention to Petrenko, and as a result, in 1987 he moved to the capital of the USSR.

Star career at Dynamo

In the very first season for the new Petrenko club, Sergey sought to justify the trust of the coaches. In the current championship of the Soviet Union, he played in 31 matches, where he scored 7 (2 + 5) points.

The next season began for the capital team very well. She became the owner of the Berlin Cup, and after - the champion of the USSR. Petrenko went on the ice in 23 games, scored 4 goals and became the author of 6 assists.

In the next, and then in the last championship of the Soviet Union (1991), Dynamo twice won gold medals in competitions. In addition, the metropolitan team won the Tampere and Lugano Cups.

It was in the 1990/91 season that Sergei Petrenko showed his best performance indicator at that time - 27 (14 + 13) points in 43 matches played.

The following year, Dynamo Moscow became the first holder of the CIS title. Petrenko, with his excellent game and good performance, attracted the interest of not only the national team coaches, but also the NHL scouts.

Overseas career stage

In 1993, Sergey Petrenko was selected by the Buffalo Sabers team in the NHL draft . However, the career in the most prestigious hockey league in North America for the Russian striker was not the best way. For the new club, he spent only 14 fights, in which he scored four assists.

The end of this season and the next Petrenko spent in the AHL, playing for the “Rochester Americans”. In its composition, the striker played in 81 matches, scored 28 goals and gave 31 assists.

At the end of the 1994/95 season, Petrenko decided to return to Russia.

Frequent change of teams and retirement

Upon his return to Russia, Petrenko again became a player in Moscow Dynamo. In its composition, he became the owner of the MHL Cup. The next season, the striker tried his hand at the Swiss Hockey League, playing for HC Davos. Here, for 41 games played, Petrenko scored 42 (19 + 23) points.

From 2007 to 2009, Sergei Anatolyevich replenishes the ranks of the capital's Dynamo again. During this period, he twice became a participant in the Euroleague final and once - in the national cup. Despite the good performance (25 abandoned goals and 44 accurate assists in 84 fights), Sergey Petrenko again leaves Dynamo.

The following season, the 31-year-old striker ended up in the Czech club Vitkovice. For the new team, Petrenko scored 7 goals in 29 matches played.
Having failed to gain a foothold in the new club, Sergei Anatolyevich returned to Russia again.

Here he is briefly detained in the Novokuznetsk “Metallurg”, and in the 2000/01 season he signs a one-year contract with the Tomacomai team from the Japan Hockey League. Unfortunately, even with very good performance (14 goals and 31 assists in 41 matches), the new club did not want to renew the contract with the Russian striker.

Having once again returned to Russia, Petrenko played for Cherepovets Severstal, Novosibirsk Sibir and Perm Hammer-Prikamye. It was here in 2004 that he ended his long playing career.

Team appearances

For the first time, Sergey Petrenko was called up for the USSR youth team in 1988. At the home World Cup, he, along with the team of the Soviet Union, became the owner of the World Cup silver medals.

Two years later, he was called up as part of a joint CIS team to participate in the Winter Olympics in Albertville. The striker played in 8 fights and scored 2 goals, and the team won the Games. For this achievement Sergey Petrenko received the title of Honored Master of Sports.

In the same year, the hockey player was invited to play for the newly created national team of Russia. The first performance at the World Cup was not very successful for her - only fifth place. But a year later, Russian hockey players with Petrenko in the composition confidently won the 1993 World Cup.

Coaching

After the completion of his playing career, Sergey Anatolyevich became a coach. Since 2011, he worked at the Dynamo Sports School, simultaneously preparing for the international competition the junior team of Russia.
