Stadium History

Among the several cities of Russia in which the World Cup will be held, Kazan is considered to be one of the most sporting and most prepared for this event. The central stadium was named after V.I. Lenin, since the construction completion date (June 25, 1960) coincided with the 90th anniversary of his birthday. The construction was led by architect V.E. Portyankin, who won the tender for the construction of the stadium in the second half of the 50s. In the 90s the name of the football arena changed - since then it’s the Central Stadium, the main owner of which is the Rubin football team.

Since there was no indoor ice rink until 1967, the Kazan Central Stadium in winter was an excellent platform for training and hockey matches. With the advent of frost, ice was pouring in the stadium and hockey players replaced the players.

But thanks to the big event - the millennium of the third capital of Russia - the city administration found the necessary funds for its complete reconstruction. The stadium was so successfully modernized that it was awarded 4 stars by the European Union of Football Associations. Due to this status, the Central Stadium has the right to host world-class events. The first such match was played already in 2013, during the World Summer Universiade.
