Martini is a Vermouth born in Piedmont over 150 years ago. The exact formula of the drink is kept secret to this day. It is only known that the basis of it was wine and 40 different herbs.
Stylish alcoholic drink almost instantly became famous throughout the world. Martini was one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite drinks. He loved Martini Dry, which he ordered at every bar. Moreover, this famous writer glorified the drink, forever capturing it in his works. Hemingway gave the habit of drinking dry martini to some of the heroes of his novels.
Brand history
In 1847, four entrepreneurs - Eligio Baudino, Carlo Agnelli, Clement Michel and Carlo Re founded the Turin brand Michel Re Agnelli e Baudino, which produced aromatic wines. At that time, herbal tinctures came into fashion in Italy, so the business of this enterprising four went uphill. After 10 years of the brand’s existence, Alessandro Martini from Florence joined the team. He was, in modern language, a marketer.
Thanks to Alessandro, the brand received such a tremendous success that after a few years the young Florentine was appointed to manage the company as a reward for his services. Time passed, and the founders of the brand gradually retired. The company has 2 owners: Alessandro Martini and former accountant Teofil Sola.
In 1863, it was rebranded, and since then the manufacturing company has become known as Martini, Sola e C.ia. At that time, a young herbalist Luigi Rossi worked at the company. Martini and Sola, at the cost of incredible efforts, lured him to work: the guy had an unusual talent for making liquors based on herbs.
It was Luigi Rossi who created the vermouth martini as he is known now. The first drink was Martini Rosso, who was awarded a gold medal at the World's Fair in the Irish city of Dublin.
Stunning success
Since then, the success of the company has not been stopped! Imagine, King Victor Emmanuel the Second himself gave the order to place the coat of arms of the House of Savoy on a martini label in 1868.
In 1879, the company underwent another rebranding in connection with the death of Sola. Since that time, she bears the name that the whole world knows today - Martini & Rossi.
And then the brand’s success story swiftly rushed up. Won numerous Grand Prix, the opening of representative offices in different countries, the supply of products to the Royal Houses of Europe and Asia, a frantic success among the cream of society: politicians, stars, golden youth. The cost of 1 liter of Martini Bianco obviously did not bother them: they could afford it, and this drink was always amazingly good.
