Acumen - what is it and how to develop this skill in yourself

Acumen is the ability of a person to quickly find solutions in a given situation. Many people think that the words “quick wits”, “mind” and “wisdom” are synonyms, but this is not so. All these qualities are inherent in people, but they have characteristic differences among themselves. A person may be smart, but not smart, but may possess both the quality and the same time. Let’s try to figure out what the difference is, but first we’ll look at one example of quick wits.

Smart owner

One man noticed that 5 thieves were operating in his yard. He quickly called the police, but there he was informed that there were no free patrol cars, and as soon as at least one was free, they would send an outfit. The man quickly realized what to do. After 5 minutes, he called the police back and said that the outfit was no longer needed, since he had shot thieves from a gun. A few minutes later, a huge number of armed policemen drove up to the courtyard. They still had to detain the criminals, because the man did not shoot at anyone.

quick wisdom what is

This example of quick thinking proves that the man did not need any special knowledge. He acted very quickly and spontaneously, because his property was in danger. It is in such unexpected moments that quick-wittedness most often comes. What quality can save a person’s property, the man did not know. He simply acted as his mind prompted. That is, a smart person may not even know that he is one.

Cleverness in children

At school, we get a huge store of knowledge and constantly develop and train our mind. However, the school curriculum devotes very little time to the training of quick wits, and only mechanical memory is developed. Very vain, because almost all people from childhood have a well-developed acumen, and if it is not trained over the years, it gradually disappears. This is very easy to check: the child can be shown a quick-witted test, and it is likely that his result will be better than yours.

quick test

Many children think very unconventionally, although many adults consider this a childish trick. While the child’s head is fresh and not clogged with template thinking, he is able to find the most unusual solutions to ordinary situations. And do not confuse concepts such as cunning and ingenuity. What is a trick, everyone knows. First of all, these are certain actions not only for the benefit of oneself, but also to the detriment of others. But children, by their nature, are very kind and resourceful. Most babies, even if they do bad things, do it not intentionally.

How quick wit works

Acumen can be divided into several parts: co-image-performance. Literally, you can translate as a combination of images. In any situation requiring a solution, a smart person has two images in his head. The first is what this problem looks like, and the second is how it should be solved. Mentally combining these two images, a person finds a solution. It may not necessarily be based on past experience, but this solution will necessarily be non-standard. In other words, out-of-the-box thinking is smartness. What is mind and wisdom, everyone knows. This is experience gained through information sources.

Cleverness training

A variety of puzzles are used to train ingenuity. Another good way to train is to pay attention to various details in everyday life. Smart people are pretty observant. They notice various seemingly unnecessary little things. However, when a critical situation arises, it is these little things that save the person. In addition, the development of quick thinking has a very beneficial effect on logical thinking.

For training, you can try to pay attention to various objects and fantasize about them. For example, in front of you is a cup, think about why the handle on it is located in this way and in this place. Imagine how the handle on this cup could still be located, and then it would be convenient to drink from it or not.

There are also quick-wittedness tests, and they, in their way, also help to develop this personality trait. For example, one very good quick-witted test. It contains 21 questions with a trick. And, it would seem, the main thing in this test is to find out the result. However, it is much more important to analyze each question and answer.

An example of a quick-witted question from a test

Two birds sit on a branch, one looking north, the other south. One of them says: “Look how dirty you are.” The second answers her: "And you are not better, your wings are stained." How can birds see dirt on each other if they look in different directions?

The answer to this question is quite simple: birds look at each other. They look only in different directions of the world.

quick thinking

There are a lot of problems of this kind. Solving at least a few puzzles every day, you can perfectly train your acumen. What quality brings to our lives - many know. Of course, first of all, it is success at work. Each boss would like to see only smart people in his staff.
