Censorship is a very interesting topic, but at the same time ambiguous. Let's talk about it in the context of the "what is censored" problem. And we find out whether a person can do without censorship at all.

Now it is argued that there is no censorship, so we have the good fortune to watch programs or read interviews of popular Western or Russian show business figures, which, for example, in cooler times, could not have appeared, and censorship was to blame. The last word means, according to the explanatory dictionary, the following: "The system of state supervision of the press and the media." The question of what censored is is directly related to the definition of censorship, and soon it will become obvious.
There is no censorship, and freedom of speech prevails in us. But if we give ourselves the trouble to think a little, we will understand: there is censorship. All the media that exist on state money adhere to a certain politeness regarding their employer, and this is completely normal, because no one wants to lose their jobs. It is another matter that the present state does not set any ideological tasks (at least obvious ones), therefore there is no such press that existed in Soviet times. Then, as you know, the press carried an educational function. I must say that this idea is not so bad. For example, the yellow press would not be allowed to the public, is it tragic? But yes, many journalists would be left without work.

Once it became clear what censorship is, it is worth turning to the immediate hero of our story today, the word censored. His translation is simple, but first you need to say this: this is not an English noun, but the second communion. For example: It was censored. That is, it is impossible to translate the text on the plate appearing in the film with the corresponding inscription simply “censorship”. Rather, it should be translated as “not allowed by censorship” or “censored”. The last phrase is suitable for translating the example we used. It was censored means "was censored."

The phenomenon of self-censorship
But limitations are not always bad. Sometimes they give a striking creative impetus. It is customary to refer to the wealth of Soviet literature and the poverty of today, but we will not use cliches. And suddenly, after 20 or 30 years from the present and then past, a whole galaxy of fantastic writers crystallizes, and we gasp and say: “You think, but we did not notice!” Therefore, we can do without shortcuts.
Let's talk about something else. Imagine that the question of what censored is is of no interest to anyone because censorship has been canceled. This means that right here you can write whatever your heart desires, even obscenities. It is possible that state supervision has been abolished, but the internal censor still remains, which means that decent authors will not be able to publicly express themselves dirtyly. This is precisely the phenomenon of self-censorship. For creativity, an extremely productive education when it comes to conscience. For example, Sergei Dovlatov had a commandment that in one sentence words should not begin with one letter. Stylistics from such beliefs only won. But this is also a kind of limitation.
