AISI 430 stainless steel: Russian counterpart, specifications

The Russian analogue of AISI 430 is steel 08x17T. In terms of performance, it is this raw material that is most consistent with 430.

Basic information

Steel grade 430 - stainless alloy. Currently, this corrosion-resistant ferritic chromium steel for general purposes is very widespread. In short, in AISI 430, the Russian analogue of which is 08x17T, the following main characteristics can be distinguished:

  • The strength and mechanical properties of this material are very high.
  • Increased resistance to corrosion, including atmospheric. Such indicators of this parameter are due to the fact that the composition contains a rather high content of chromium, and carbon is very low.
  • The processing level of this steel is also very high. Excellent plastic deformability is observed, the alloy lends itself well to stamping, drawing, etc.

As mentioned earlier, the Russian analogue of AISI 430 is 08x17T steel, however, a reservation should be made here. The first option is not only an analogue, it is considered an improved version. Technical requirements for the second group of raw materials are established by GOST 5632-72. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that the brand 08x17T, in turn, is a substitute for such material as 12X18H10T and 12X18H9T.

Characteristics of 430 steel and 08x17T

Material 08x17T, which is the Russian analogue of AISI 430, belongs to the group of austenitic steels. The raw materials of both the first and second markings have approximately the same corrosion resistance when it comes to most application environments. However, there are differences. The domestic product belongs to the category of nickel-containing austenitic substances, while 430 is a group of ferritic low-carbon chromium products. In other words, they can be used in all environments suitable for 08x17T, and also additionally, where there is an increased sulfur content.

Due to this difference, 430 grade can be used in the production of component materials. For example, in the manufacture of hoses through which oil products are pumped, oil or gas itself.

Scope and price

The AISI430 brand is successfully used in technological installations of gas processing and oil refining. However, even this substance is subjected to lengthy tests before being put into operation. Only the product that has passed the test for susceptibility to corrosion under the influence of such factors as: temperature changes, contact with various raw materials, ability to withstand loads, useful life, abrasive effects of substances and other specific tests can be used.

If we talk about the price for this product, then it is quite high, although on an industrial scale it is considered quite acceptable, especially in comparison with other steels with similar qualities. For example, for a ton of raw materials with a thickness of 5 to 60 mm, you will have to pay about 155,000 rubles.

Analogue in chemical composition

The domestic grade 12x17 became an analogue in characteristics for chemical AISI 430 stainless steel . However, it is important to note that this product is only the closest in composition. The difference between AISI and domestic raw materials is quite large and it is as follows. The amount of carbon in 430 is very, very low, which eliminates the need for stabilizing steel with titanium. In percentage terms, carbon indicators are approximately 0.002-0.035%. This proportion of the total mass ensures the complete absence of intergranular corrosion at elevated temperatures. Intensive carbide formation will occur only when the temperature goes over 1000 degrees Celsius. In addition, the low amount of carbon provides excellent weldability of the material. Another difference between the domestic analogue for AISI 430 was that at a temperature of 500 to 800 degrees insensitivity to intergranular fracture is observed. The main advantage of 430 is that it better resists chloride cracking under pressure.

Characteristics 430 and 12X18H10T

If we continue the discussion about the characteristics of AISI, it should be noted that it has a rather low coefficient of thermal expansion. This allows you to effectively use steel in those places where there are constant changes in high temperatures. In addition, there is a high thermal conductivity of this raw material, which ensures the effective use of steel in those systems where heat transfer is important. Analogs of the AISI 430 stainless steel do not possess such qualities.

The specific heat capacity of 430 is quite low, which means that at low energy costs, the product will heat up and cool down faster. This property makes it possible to avoid defects such as inertial overheating. According to some parameters, AISI 430 can be compared with such a steel grade of domestic production as 12X18H10T. Mainly:

  • The specific heat at 20 degrees Celsius for 430 is 0.44 J / g * K, and for the second group it is 0.52.
  • Thermal conductivity for 430 - 25 W / m * K, for domestic steel - 15, at a temperature of 20 degrees.

There are several more characteristics, but the raw materials 12X18H10T will always be inferior in them.

The difference between AISI 304 and AISI 430

If we talk about these two grades of steel, then they have some differences among themselves, which come from the difference in composition. Both materials are corrosion resistant. This property is endowed with chromium entering the alloy. 430 contains up to 16% chromium of the total mass, and 304 contains up to 18%. We can say that in this parameter they are practically not inferior to each other, although there is still a difference of 2%.

difference between aisi 304 and aisi 430

The main difference between the raw materials of these brands is that the nickel content is different. If in AISI 304 this indicator reaches 10%, then in 430 it does not exceed 1%. The introduction of such an alloying element as nickel leads to an increase in the manufacturability of steel. Naturally, the higher the content of this substance, the greater the difference.

In other words, nickel is considered a more refractory material. And this means that it does not fade at the same temperatures as chrome. Thus, it can be argued that the corrosion resistance of welds at 304 grade is much higher than at 430, as there is more nickel.

Physical properties of AISI 430 steel

This steel has the following physical parameters:

  • the density of the material is 7.75 g / cm 3 ;
  • the melting point for the material is from 1425 to 1510 degrees Celsius;
  • the thermal expansion index for AISI 430 is 10.4x10-6 / K;
  • the elastic modulus for raw materials is 200 GPa;
  • thermal conductivity is in the region of 23.9 W / mK.

All these indicators have led to the fact that this steel grade is used in almost any industry: design and architecture, civil engineering, the food industry, the automotive industry, etc.

It is also worth noting that the cost of 304 grades is much higher than that of 430. The price of the Russian analogue of AISI 430 steel, for example, 12X18H10T, is 79,000 rubles per ton. This is the cost per sheet metal. In general, pricing differs quite strongly, but also in terms of characteristics, AISI has incorporated all the best from domestic models and even improved these indicators.
