Spent engine oil: characteristics, application, tips

Each driver periodically faces the need to change the oil in the engine of his car. This procedure can be performed independently, without contacting a service center. However, always in this case there is a problem - where to put the used engine oil.

Waste oil in waste classification

According to the federal classification of the waste catalog (FCCW), used motor oils have a code of 40611001313, which refers to waste mineral oils.

From the contents of this code it follows that “mining” refers to the fourth block (the first digit), which determines that it is really waste that has lost consumer properties.

Oil pollution

The remaining figures indicate that the used engine oil refers to oil products waste in which halogens are not contained. It is a liquid species (in it from 90 to 98% of oil products, from 2 to 10% of water). It belongs to the third hazard class of waste according to the degree of its environmental impact. The third class is considered moderately dangerous. Such waste impacts on the surrounding ecological environment with its constituents, however, its recovery occurs relatively quickly, in about 10 years.

Waste Oil Processing

As mentioned above, "mining" refers to the third class of danger, which indicates its negative impact on human health. As a result of this, enterprises are obliged to organize the process of collecting waste engine oil, its storage, transportation for processing.

Based on the requirements of regulatory documents of the Russian Federation, there is a list of wastes that need to be removed, processed or disposed of:

  • transformer oils after use;
  • lubricant mixtures intended for cooling units and assemblies;
  • oil emulsions;
  • motor lubricants;
  • hydraulic and compression mixtures;
  • mineral and synthetic oils;
  • industrial oils.

Motor oils that have undergone the operation process are subject to contamination, lose their properties, which prevents their further use as intended. They include traces of work in difficult conditions, dangerous impurities: water; chemical components; metal particles; mud of various composition.

As a result of this, their processing should be carried out in accordance with the established rules for disposal and processing at specialized enterprises.

The content of the processing process

The processing process is based on the filtering process and the return of the original properties to the oil, bringing its operational state. These processes involve a series of steps:

  • bringing to the initial state by regeneration;
  • moisture removal;
  • thermal cracking;
  • removal of solid particles into sedimentary layers.

After the above processes are completed, a technical oil that is again suitable for operation is obtained.

What to do with waste oil, rules for handling

The used oil drained from the engine, which is usually 4-5 liters, should not be simply poured onto the ground or in garbage cans. Such a procedure will adversely affect the natural environment. In European countries, very large fines are imposed as a result of such actions.

However, the used oil drained from the engine, unsuitable for further operation in the engine, can get a second life in domestic conditions. At home, become an assistant. This oil product has good anti-corrosion properties. It burns superbly and can also be effectively used as a lubricant.

Waste engine oil storage

However, it is necessary to observe several rules in handling the “working out”. So, used engine oil must be drained into special, marked containers. Which do not allow its course. Keep "mining" is necessary in places that are protected from moisture and sunlight. Reusing containers containing used engine oil is not recommended.

Recycling of used engine oil

Currently, there are a sufficient number of companies that specialize in the processing of used oils. Moreover, they pay for each liter, while taking away mining with a visit to the person who is going to hand over the used engine oil.

These structures, in addition to age, the oil of the "working" state, receive from it a variety of fuels, both diesel and used furnaces. The fuel obtained from the “mining” does not contain precipitation, water, which does not lead to contamination of the burners.

Used oil collection

Currently, in Russia, the average price per liter of used motor oil is in the range of 5 to 7 rubles per liter (when purchased from individuals). Companies (with significant volumes) buy from 10 to 12 rubles per liter. The addresses of the structures where you can pass the used engine oil are in the public domain for every person in our country.

Disposal of "mining"

Where to return the used engine oil? One of the answers to this question is to dispose of. In Russia, specialized enterprises operate that carry out such activities. However, this method has certain disadvantages, namely:

  • The costs of disposing of used engine oil must be borne by the car owner, the person who wants to get rid of it.
  • There are a relatively small number of companies involved in recycling. Those who want to return the used engine oil there have to look for them in their regions. Moreover, they, as a rule, work only with large volumes of “mining”, and are also not inclined to interact with private individuals.
  • Experience suggests that the processes associated with the search for such a company, the import, delivery of used oil, take a lot of time.

Based on the foregoing, it follows that the delivery of oil for disposal is not the best option.

You can also dispose of used engine oil by burning it. However, it should be remembered that this must be done without harming the environment. This implies the availability of special equipment and conditions, as well as appropriate licensing.

Household use

Craftsmen believe that used oil is an indispensable helper in everyday life. Since the advent of mining, they began to use it as a means to prevent corrosion of metals.

Experienced motorists fill the used engine oil in the thresholds of the body, in which there are no through holes. This oil product is used for processing bottoms and arches of cars. Experts confirm that such an application of “working off” allows saving on preparations with anticorrosive properties.

The domestic use of used engine oil, its effectiveness is due to the fact that its initial composition is quite universal. So "mining" effectively protects wooden structures from decay, destruction.

For those who have summer cottages, suburban wooden buildings, used motor oil will help get rid of mold, fungus and moss in the verandas, arbors, and fences. The walls of structures are also impregnated with “mining”, but it should be used only on their external part.

In foundation work, used motor oil is used for priming bitumen coatings, thereby increasing their waterproofing properties. Very high quality prevents the appearance of rust on metal structures.

Firewood that has been saturated with pre-used engine oil burns very well. A significant amount of heat is released. However, it should be remembered that safety precautions should be followed.

  • Do not use this wood in stoves that have insufficient traction. Due to the high toxicity of motor oil, the consequences can be negative for the human body.
  • In view of the same toxicity, the specified fuel cannot be used in residential premises.

Prospects

Currently, the main producers of fuels and lubricants are developing for the production of refillable motor oils. Such engine oils, after they have been used in automobile engines, are supposed to be returned to the manufacturer for cleaning. After that, the oil can be used again. It is assumed that such a method will lead to a significant reduction in environmental risks and the solution of the problem of disposal of "mining".
