Sexual issues are among those that will always concern humanity. Especially sexual identity issues. For this, there is a special tool - the Kinsey scale. Let's get to know him in more detail.
Alfred Kinsey: curriculum vitae
This is a biologist, sexologist, who spent most of his life on a campus in America in the Midwest. Now the institute is named after him.
His journey into science began with an interest in entomology. He prepared and published a biology textbook for high school students. But in the history of Kinsey, he remained more as the father of sexology than as a great biologist. Studying the mating variations among insects led him to the idea that a person may have different variants of sexual behavior. The professor developed the Kinsey scale, which allows you to determine the orientation of a person.
In 1935, Kinsey publicly publicized the results of her research in sexology for the first time. The reports obtained from interviews of thousands of people became a bestseller, made their author a celebrity, and still remain popular.
Kinsey Discussions
Accidentally or not, the professor’s research coincided with the period known as the “sexual revolution”. Of course, they caused fierce debate. He was accused of debauchery, considered his work morally corrupting, accused of having sexual relations with children, and the fact that his research was based on interviews with prisoners. Until now, the name Kinsey can cause an aggressive reaction, as it is believed that it legitimizes homosexuality. Indeed, thanks to the research of Professor Kinsey, homosexuality was excluded from the list of mental illnesses.
Even decades after the death of the scientist, one can hear the continuation of the controversy. His studies are trying to blame the presence of statistical and methodological errors. However, all this does not change the scale of the scientist's contribution to those areas of science that were previously severely prohibited.
What is a Kinsey scale ?
This is a tool to measure people's sexual orientation. For this, a six-point scale is developed. Absolute heterosexuality is located on one end of the scale, and absolute homosexuality is on the other. Despite the fact that the scale is six-point, in fact, it has eight gradations: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6, x.
The researcher says that there is no absolute discreteness, this is in most cases a union.
Scale Features
This is not a psychological test. Although under the name "Kinsey Scale" on the Internet you can find a huge number of tests. This is a way of self-esteem when a person determines himself on the basis of the sexual experience that he has experienced over the past three years.
This means that the scale does not reveal hidden addictions or anything that the person himself does not suspect. Another important conclusion is that the assessment can change throughout life, depending on how the nature of a person’s sexual intercourse changes.
On the basis of such a tool as the Kinsey scale, the test also exists, but these are modifications created by other researchers based on the work of the professor.
How to use the scale?
Kinsey scale for men and women is exactly the same. To find your place on it, you need to take into account the number of sexual contacts with people of your own or the opposite sex. An important point is contacts! And not fantasies, erotic dreams, watched videos and conversations on intimate topics. Only real contacts matter.
If you do not have homosexual experience at all, this corresponds to a value of 0.
If contacts with people of the same sex were episodic, and with people of the opposite sex it was regular, this situation corresponds to a value of 1.
If there is a lot of experience with persons of both sexes, but still with the opposite - more, this corresponds to a value of 2.
Equality of experience corresponds to figure 3.
Accordingly, with a small margin on the side of homosexual contacts - 4, with a significant margin - 5, and if you have experience of sex only with your gender and lack of sex with the opposite - 6.
If for the studied three years there were no sexual contacts at all, this corresponds to the value of x - asexuality.
In fact, this is one question and seven possible answers to it. That's all. No secrets and mysticism. Therefore, if you dreamed of revealing the secret inclinations of your husband or beloved girl and thought that the Kinsey scale in Russian will help you in this, you will have to give up on this idea. Nothing will work out.
Test modification
If you still want to play, then there is a modification of the test, which was developed by Fritz Klein. Especially curious from this point of view is the Kinsey scale for women. It is easy to take the test online on the Internet.
Why for women? It is they who most often ask questions about sexual orientation, although men do too. Klein's variation is known as the “Sexual Orientation Lattice” and contains 21 questions. This test contains questions not only about real experience in the past, but also about which sexes are attractive to you, including in a situation if you were free from fears and prejudices. With people of your gender would you like to experience a sexual experience if you had an ideal situation, when you are free from prejudices and fears, who is present in fantasies and dreams? The test even has questions about emotional preferences and communication preferences. The result is given as a percentage of homosexuality, bisexuality, heterosexuality and asexuality.
Try it and maybe learn something interesting about yourself or your partner. But do not take the test results too seriously.
