"Not Available or Not Available": spelling of short adjectives

The subscriber is "unavailable" or "not available" - a fairly common dilemma. The spelling of short adjectives has always raised questions: this part of the speech is difficult to distinguish from full adjectives and from short participles. It is easy to confuse the rules with each other, and almost never succeeds in understanding and choosing the right option. That is why there are so many who want to figure out how to do it right. And for them, this article.

General spelling rule for short adjectives

Main rule

It is unlikely to help those who are poorly versed in the grammar of the Russian language, but may well make life easier for those who understand at least something in it. This rule sounds as follows: short adjectives are written together or separately with the “not” particle in the same way as complete ones. For instance:

  • This person is unpleasant - this person is unpleasant to me.
  • The man was far from polite, so few people liked him - the man was far from polite, so few people liked him.

The same goes for the ill-fated "unavailable" or "unavailable" subscriber. Of course, this is of little use, if you do not understand the spelling of full adjectives. But, on the other hand, you can always figure it out.

Fused spelling of adjectives with the particle "not"

Adjectives with the particle “not” are written together in the following cases:

  1. When the word without "no" is not used. For example: clumsy, awkward, ugly, rainy, myriad, unhappy.
  2. When, by the way, you can choose a synonym without "not." For example: a shallow lake - a shallow, unhappy child - a sad, not close path - a long one.
  3. When a word without "not" is not antonym for a word with "not". For example: poor health is not the antonym of the “important”, a serious problem is not the antonym of the “comic”, a short-sighted person is not the antonym of the distant.

As mentioned above, short adjectives obey the same rules.

Separate spelling of adjectives with the particle "not"

Adjectives with the particle “not” are written separately in the following cases:

  1. When there is opposition in the sentence. For example: the lake is not deep, but shallow. The work is not easy, but difficult. The conversation is not pleasant, but tiring.
  2. When there is a so-called “reinforcement of negation” in front of the adjective - the words “not at all”, “not at all”, “far from”, “not at all”. For example: it’s not at all funny, the dialogue is not at all pleasant, the news is far from good.
Reinforced denial

Usually, having learned these rules, you can write in Russian correctly, without experiencing problems with the spelling of adjectives with the particle "not."

Not available or unavailable?

Inaccessible subscriber

If we return now to the ill-fated subscriber, his "accessibility" no longer seems such a difficult dilemma. Obviously, by the word "inaccessible" in this context, it is quite possible to choose a synonym: blocked, out of reach, disabled. Therefore, in no case will it be a mistake to write this word together. For instance:

  • The train carrying my interlocutor drove into a long tunnel, and the system reported that the subscriber was unavailable.

However, if you include a contrast in the sentence, "not available" can be written together. It will look like this:

  • I was going to call my friend, but I was stopped by the fact that the subscriber is not available, but disconnected, and it is not possible to contact him.

You can also add a “reinforcement of negation” and, as in the previous case, write the word “not available” separately:

  • First, the answer to the call was deaf phone rings, and then the subscriber disconnected the phone and became completely unavailable.

As can be seen from the proposed examples, it is impossible to speak of a unique and only true variant of writing in this case. Each case must be carefully analyzed, and the rules must be memorized. So everyone who wants to write correctly in Russian will have to decide for themselves whether his “subscriber” is “not available” or “not available”.
