Black dialect - the language of Mordor

The epic “Lord of the Rings” is more than a science fiction novel. This is part of the whole universe. It found a place for the own languages of different tribes and peoples, which Tolkien inhabited his magical world.

Great storyteller and linguist

J.R.R. Tolkien himself performed a miracle, not just writing a fantasy epic - he seemed to have breathed life into the universe of Middle-earth. The writer did a tremendous job of supplementing, deepening and detailing the events in The Lord of the Rings. Including professor of linguism at the University of Oxford painstakingly developed languages for elves and gnomes, higher creatures and mere mortals, even orcs. These are not scattered words, not meaningless and random sets of sounds for concepts and names. Tolkien invested all his talent, deep knowledge and enormous experience in them, invented adverbs professionally, according to all the rules of word formation.

All the peoples of Middle-earth and in general the Arda universe have traditions, historical chronicles, genealogies, tales of the forerunners and higher beings, which are included in separate literary works or mentioned in the central “Lord of the Rings”. The epic itself began with the author writing disparate passages about certain traditions of a fairy-tale country that Tolkien had composed since his youth. At some point, they began to merge with each other, become locked into a chain of events, thus the universe of Middle-earth and Arda was born.

Here we will talk about one of the fictional languages - the black dialect of Mordor.

“In Mordor, where everlasting darkness ...”

The most famous saying in this dialect is a fiery inscription on the ring of omnipotence.

As in The Lord of the Rings, Gandalf explained to the surprised Frodo, who did not understand the runes on the ring, although he studied the elven, the inscription was written in black. The enemy language does not have its own letter.

The black dialect is a language coined by Tolkien. According to his plan, the dialect is considered artificial in the work itself. Sauron created it for his subjects, who spoke in scattered dialects or a warped western - the universal language of the peoples of Middle-earth. The Black Lord, not possessing light and creative power, stole writing, as he had long been established, from his eternal adversaries - the elves. Even creating the ring of omnipotence, he wrote down the black curse itself with the runes of the elven language invented by Tolkien.

Ring Curse Phonation

All Tolkienists, even beginners, know a few words in the highest black dialect (spoken by the Nazguls and other dark hierarchs) - this is the phonation of the inscription on the ring of omnipotence. She is very famous, many fans of fantasy epics know her by heart:

“Ash Nazg Durbatuluk,

Ash Nazg Gimbatul

Ash nazg trakatuluk

Ak bourzum ishi krimpatul. ”

"One ring will conquer them,

One ring will find them

One ring will pull them

And forged in a single black chain. "

Ghash

Orcs and other parts of the dark army, for example, black tribes in its composition, have an easier dialect, but the fictional language is the same. Another famous word is ghash, oroc. When the Brotherhood of the Ring fell into a trap in the Hall of Memory of Moria, Gandalf heard the closing retreat and told his friends that the enemies repeated the word “ghash” - fire in black dialect.

Nazgul

As they say, the Nazguls are not remembered by night, especially in the black dialect. The ring-bearers preferred to speak Western. The Nazgul is formed from two words - “Nazg” and “hum”, in Oroch - a ring and a ghost.

The word nazg is also present in the curse. There is meant the ring of omnipotence. The Nazguls had their nine rings, which Sauron gave them. With their help, he enslaved these great rulers of people, seducing them with power. And since then they are neither living nor dead, like ghosts, forever serving the Black Lord and the main ring.

Fans of fantasy continue the work of a professor and a storyteller, studying and developing their beloved invented world, including the languages of magical peoples.
