On the territory of the Sokolniki district, in the north-eastern part of the capital, the park of the same name is located, with a total area of 516 hectares. The park zone got its name back in the 16th century, when there was a forest in this place, in which royal and princely families went hunting with the help of falcons.
Historical reference
Ivan the Terrible hunted in the park, then Alexei Mikhailovich and so on. All of them used trained falcons. At the end of the XVII century, Peter I made a clearing in the forest, in which he arranged public festivities. Today it is called the May Glade.
Later, during the Patriotic War of 1812, another clearing was laid in the forest so that it was possible to get to Elk Island as quickly as possible, now it is called 4th Radiation. After the fire, in the same year, a significant part of the forest was cut down to restore Moscow, but the grove soon recovered again.
Later, the Falcon Grove was re-planned, several more malls were added. In 1863, a wooden church, Tikhon Zadonsky, was erected on May Bay. In 1878, the park was bought by the city authorities and it became publicly available. They carried out beautification, created a rotunda, an open stage, formed ponds and built a dam.
Modern park
The radial-ring structure of the park was formed back in the 30s of the last century. To date, the park has 13 reservoirs. In 2009, a specially protected area was formed with a total area of 229.2 hectares. Since the 2000s, the park has gradually recovered, now there is a sports complex, playgrounds for football and other sports, a chess and drafts club, a tennis town, attractions, a museum of modern calligraphy and other infrastructure. Naturally, many visitors are concerned about the question - is there a parking lot in the Sokolniki park?
