Information management: concept, basic approaches and types of companies

Information management is a technology whose main components are:

- staff;

- documents, software and hardware for process support.

Recently, it is this type of management that has become popular thanks to the transition of society to a new, post-industrial stage of development.

Information systems in management are of great importance, which must be necessarily approved normatively. They are an organizationally ordered set of arrays of documents and technologies using computer tools and communications that implement the information process system.

Information systems are designed to store, process, search, distribute, transmit and provide data. Therefore, we need to consider in more detail the features of their formation and functioning.

Information management in the organization is developed in accordance with the following provisions.

Firstly, it is carried out only within a particular firm.

Secondly, information becomes an independent factor of production, which lies in the decision-making process.

Thirdly, information management is related not only to information, but also to the entire information work of the organization. Moreover, it is a broader and broader concept than simple document management.

Information management is the peculiarities of managing the activities for the formation and application of data in the interests of the company. Its main goal is to effectively ensure the development of the company by regulating various types of activities.

There is a different interpretation of the concept of "information management" in different countries.

In a German school, it is understood as a whole complex of goals and objectives of management, which relates to the sphere of formation and use of information resources.

The English school interprets IT management in the form of a set of management tasks that are associated with an information data system.

The Russian definition of information management includes an extensive range of management tasks, the solution of which will determine the achievement of the goals of a particular enterprise. This is achieved through a coordinated and effective management of information resources and enterprise technologies.

In this type of management, in accordance with the above parameters, two types of enterprises can be characterized.

In companies with a high level of application of information management, a number of indicators stand out:

  • organization management is able to explain the holistic procedure of its organization;

  • top management is directly involved in the basic procedures and the adoption of strategic orders;

  • There are clear business goals in order to invest in this area;

  • there is dynamics in reducing changes in governance.

In companies with a low level of application of information management, the following series of indicators can be distinguished:

  • top management, such management is perceived as an industry that has a low return on investment;

  • information management in this form becomes an obstacle in order to implement new company strategies;

  • inconsistent or slow action in IT decision making;

  • top management is not able to explain the basic and current procedures within this management;

  • company projects in IT never fit into the budget or timeline;

  • management mechanisms often change.

Due to the presence of these two approaches to management, the theory and practice of information management in Russia requires significant improvement.
