The Teberda River is one of the large rivers of Karachay-Cherkessia (Northern Caucasus). One of the left (i.e. southern) tributaries of the Kuban River. The total length of the river channel is 60 km, and the catchment area is 1080 square meters. km Teberda flows through mountainous terrain, among the highlands. This is one of the famous tourist areas of Russia.
Not far from the upper reaches the border with Abkhazia. It is also an important tourist region of the Caucasus. And where does the Teberda River flow? This can be read in this article.
The climate of the region
Teberda flows through the Central Caucasus, whose climate is very different from that in the neighboring Western Caucasus. First of all, there is a higher continentality and less rainfall. The daily temperature amplitude rises. More sun, less cloud.
The farther from the Main Caucasus Range (that is, when moving downstream), the drier the climate becomes. This mainly applies to the cold six months. In general, the snowfall in winters is much lower than in the Western Caucasus. Monthly precipitation ranges from less than 50 to more than 100 mm. A large amount of sun and considerable heights, as well as the absence of pollution lead to an excess of ultraviolet radiation, and this must be taken into account.
Ecology
There are no large industrial enterprises in the Teberda River Basin, as in the neighboring regions. Also, there are no million-plus cities. This means that there should not be problems with air and water quality. Of course, the presence of tourist camps in the valley can lead to some pollution of the water in the river itself, but on those tributaries where there are none, the water will be very clean. However, you should not use water if it is rusty in color or flows from places with high levels of radiation. This rule applies to all areas of the Caucasus. The absence of anthropogenic pollutants is not always a guarantee that the water in a stream or stream will be absolutely safe for human health.
The Teberda River is a great place where you can breathe clean mountain air and burn a fire from environmentally friendly firewood. Of course, the construction of ski resorts and slopes causes considerable harm to the local flora and fauna, especially if reagents are used against snowmelt. All this should be consulted with local guides.
River features
The Teberda River originates from the slopes of the Main Caucasian Range, after which it flows northward and then flows into the Kuban River. In places, the channel forms gorges. Here is one of the most beautiful gorges of the Caucasus. It is covered with pristine coniferous forest. In the photo, the Teberda River looks quite spectacular.
The river valley is quite straight, without sharp bends. She rushes to the northeast. This is one of the easternmost tributaries of the Kuban. The next to the east is the Aksaut River, and then the Kuban itself flows. It turns out that Teberda is located almost in the center of Karachay-Cherkessia. The famous Teberda city is located near the river. Nearby there are many ski slopes, ski lifts. This is a traditional ski region of the Caucasus since Soviet times. The history of the resort Krasnaya Polyana is incomparably shorter.
On both sides of the Teberda River, the Caucasus Mountains rise. The lower parts of their slopes are covered with forests of pine, fir, spruce and some hardwood. Above extend meadows and alpine wastelands. And at the peaks you can meet snowfields and glaciers.
There are also several beautiful mountain lakes. There is no ice formation on the river, and in winter only sludge is formed on it. It carries the largest amount of water (up to 27.2 m 3 / s) in the summer months, which is associated with rains and melting snow and ice. The bed itself is often clogged with boulders, stones. There are rifts, waterfalls. The bottom is lined with pebbles.
At the river you can find numerous tourist and alpine camps, bases. This means that finding a house near the mountain river Teberda is not difficult. A Military-Sukhumi road was laid along the channel. In the upper reaches - Teberdinsky reserve. And at the place where it merged with Kuban, the city of Karachaevsk was located.
Features of hydrology
Teberda has a mixed diet. Ice and snow give a little more than 50% of the total volume of the drain. A hundred mountain glaciers give their melt fresh water to the river. Teberda is usually multi-water, and it has a fast flow. The water is clear and transparent, with a blue tint. An additional source of nutrition is mineral water sources. The Teberda River has inspired poets more than once, it is sung about in the song of Yuri Vizbor.
