How to disable hibernation

Buying a computer for your home is an event! From this moment on, a person’s whole life is conditionally divided into two intervals - “Before” and “After”. A novice user has to master completely new areas for himself: to learn how to turn off hibernation, how to work with the Start menu, how to launch applications and solve many other related issues. If some of the main points of work can be quite successfully figured out on their own, then others require reading the relevant literature, searching for answers on sites and forums. One of those “slippery” questions is how to turn off hibernation.

Frankly, the author of this article, as a user with many years of experience, believed that since the basic principles of operation of operating systems have changed very little lately, fundamentally no unsolvable problems can arise: knowing how to drive a car, you can safely drive the truck. It turned out that this is not entirely true. Developers from Microsoft, starting with the infamous Vista, have added a hibernation mechanism to their operating systems. It differs radically from classical falling asleep.

When the sleep mode is activated , almost all of the computer’s hardware components turn off: the hard drive stops, the video adapter stops consuming electricity, the processor switches to a "hungry rations", consuming the required minimum, etc. Only the memory controller supports the current circulation in the modules in the circuits, ensuring the safety of the data recorded in the cells. If the components can be compared with sleeping soldiers, then the RAM is an on-duty, not closing eye. Once you press the power button, you can almost instantly continue to work from the same place where "Sleep" was activated. Even the famous SSDs are slower in this regard (at least for now). The disadvantage of this mode is the dependence of the computer on an external power source. If you use sleep, you can not pull the plug of the system unit out of the socket, because the memory controller will lose the ability to maintain current (where to get it from?). In laptops, it is powered by a battery. If the sleep mode of Windows 7 does not work, then the procedure for resolving the problem is as follows:

- you need to enable this mode in BIOS (S1-S4);

- you need to install a driver for the chipset;

- The use of sleep should be allowed in the settings of the power manager.

Hibernation is a natural evolutionary development of an idea. The difference from sleep is that the RAM data is written to the hard disk in the hiberfil.sys file. Because of this, restarting is slower than from sleep mode, but you can turn off the computer’s power completely.

It is worth noting that the user at any time of their own free will can disable the hibernation of Windows 7. It is also possible in Vista and the "Eight." In other words, Microsoft does not force everyone to use this mode. But why in this case the question arises of how to disable hibernation? There are several reasons for this:

- The size of the hiberfil file is equal to the amount of memory, in other words, it is measured in gigabytes. It is irrational to lose disk space, especially if you do not use this mode;

- you can’t simply delete the file - it is a system one, therefore it is blocked;

- after disconnecting all items related to sleep and hibernation in the settings of the power manager, the huge file will not disappear.

No wonder people ask how to turn off hibernation. After all, there is no “turn off” button. The combination of Win + R comes to the rescue. We press this combination, run the cmd command on the administrator’s behalf, write powercfg -h off in the window and press Enter. That's all. After these steps, the file disappears.
