Office work is work carried out indoors. In this they differ from field work. In scientific research, they include laboratory research and experimentation. They also include the processing of data and results obtained during field studies. At present, office work is work on a computer. This has been made possible thanks to technological advances.
The term "desk work" is most often used to describe natural science research, especially in the geographical sciences, such as geodesy, cartography, geophysics, geology, archeology, anthropology and others.
Office work in geography
In geographical research, cameral work is the work of processing the material obtained on the ground. They can be intermediate and final. Intermediate work is associated with the initial (preliminary) processing of information between field trips, and final - after the completion of all field work. In this case, there must be at least two field seasons.
During intermediate desk work, in addition to primary processing of the material, current tasks are solved, methods for further research are adjusted in accordance with the results. The methodology can be changed, for example, if the information obtained from field research does not correspond to the expected. After completion of the intermediate office work, materials may be provided to the commission.
At the final work - cameral processing - computer processing of the collected material is carried out, the final conclusions are made. The length of the cameral period usually does not exceed the duration of the field research period.
Office geodetic works
In topographic work, field research involves going to the area and exploring it directly. But at the first stage, the study of existing materials and maps and their detailed study is carried out. Comparison of archived data and field research data is the task of surveyors. Currently, almost all desk work of surveyors is carried out on a computer. Cameral processing on a computer is necessary when working on designed construction sites.
Field research in geodesy is no less important than cameral. Therefore, employees often have to travel to the facility for measurements and surveys. The quality of the information obtained depends on the accuracy of these measurements. When working at the facility, all data is recorded in a special log.
Types of office geodetic works
Material processing is carried out after completion of work at the facility. Also, the cameral stage includes filling in reports, creating diagrams and topographic plans. Office processing of information is required in the following surveys:
- conducting a survey of the terrain;
- geodetic control of installation works;

- identification of deformations of technical structures;

When performing desk work, the materials obtained are systematized, after which they are transferred to the customer or specialized specialist. Moreover, information can be processed using computer programs such as Topocad, GeoniCS, Credo, MapInfo and others. These programs allow you to create accurate topographic plans with objects and communications printed on them, and can also be used to create 3D models.
It is important that the reference information used is up to date and accurate. Validation of such data may enter the cameral stage of the work of surveyors.
The final stage
At the final stage of office work, the information received is documented. After that, a technical report is compiled, to which topographic maps and plans are attached in paper and electronic form. Materials are transferred to the customer in full (report + cards).
The final document includes information on the accuracy of geodetic instruments, statements, a laser disk with a topographic plan and other materials.
