Munich 1860 is a German club that is clearly inferior in popularity to another Munich team - Bayern. However, the “lions" are still known in narrow circles. Also, “Munich 1860” is famous for its eternal rivalry with Bayern, however, in recent years the teams have almost not played against each other, since the Bavarians are leading in the First Bundesliga, and the “lions” have long been playing in the Second.
Success
Do not look at how the “Munich 1860” is playing now, there have been some glorious times in the history of this club. He even won some trophies and achieved impressive results. As the name implies, the club was founded in 1860 in Munich. Given the fact that Germany was in various geopolitical states all the time, the general German league was formed only in the second half of the twentieth century. Prior to this, “Munich 1860” managed to win the South Oberliga once in 1963, as well as the Bavarian Gaulig in 1941 and 1943.
The club also won in lower divisions. For example, three “lions” became the winners of the Bavarian League (third in level), twice won the Second Southern Oberliga and once - the Second Southern Bundesliga. However, the most striking achievement when considering the championships is that the club won in 1966 in the Bundesliga - the combined championship of all of Germany. This was the only team championship in history, since then the “lions” have never managed to rise so high. Also, 1860 managed to win the German Cup twice: in 1942 and 1964. And of course, do not forget that in 1965 the club stopped a step away from the greatest achievement - victory in the European Cup (now called the Champions League). In the finals, the Munich team lost to West Ham.
History of recent years
But how long has the Munich 1860 football club not played at the highest level? In fact, not so long ago. The fact is that in 1994 the “Lions” took third place in the Second Bundesliga and through butt games reached the First Bundesliga. There they managed to hold out for exactly ten years, the best year was 2000, when they took fourth place in the Bundesliga. But in 2004, the club took 17th place and flew to the Second Bundesliga, from which it still could not rise. And in the last two years, the “lions" have generally bordered on the relegation zone to the Third Bundesliga.
Record holders
The record holder of the club in the number of matches spent in a blue T-shirt is the Austrian Harald Cerny, who played 300 matches for Munich 1860.
