Most users have heard about the concept of defragmentation and know that it is recommended to perform it regularly, but for some reason they look at the need for such a procedure through the fingers, completely not understanding what the disk defragmentation on Windows computers gives. In this regard, it is necessary to explain what such processes are, how they work, how often you need (or do not) to perform these actions, and what tools are best used.

What is disk defragmentation, and why is it needed in Windows: introduction

First, we give basic theoretical information regarding the general provisions. If anyone does not know, all the files on the hard drive are not stored as solid objects or in one location, as is usually presented in the "Explorer". Such a display is accepted only for the convenience of user access to the necessary files. But on the hard drive, the file structure is presented in a completely different way. All files are divided into parts (fragments) that can be recorded in different places (on different tracks or even different plates). So what is hard disk defragmentation, and why is it needed? Apparently, many have already guessed that defragmentation just means the process of organizing fragments of files with moving them to areas where they would always be โ€œat handโ€. First of all, this applies exclusively to those files that are used most often. In addition, the system does not need to constantly search for files moving around the entire disk, but just go to a specific place where they were placed.

If the computer is not used often, the period can be extended to one month. But you need to perform such operations in any case, since the same Windows systems constantly install all kinds of updates, which is equivalent to installing new programs, and update files can also be scattered throughout the disk. For SSDs, as mentioned above, this maintenance is not required.
