If in the first two he seriously competed for a place in the first team, then in 2011 due to injuries the defender practically did not appear on the field. After the collapse of Serbia and Montenegro into two separate states, Marco received an invitation to the first match of the Serbian national team, but he did not accept it. A year later, he was invited to the location of the Montenegrin team, Basha refused again. He explained his action by the fact that his father is a Serb and his mother is a Montenegrin, so he cannot choose which country he should defend the honor of. In this regard, a scandal erupted, and the national team coach Zoran Filipovich threatened the talented defender with the fact that he would no longer receive an invitation to the main team.

However, in 2009, after another invitation, Marco nevertheless agreed to play for Montenegro. He made his debut in a match against Italy, where he spent on the field all 90 minutes. From 2009 to 2017 Marco Basha played for the national team 37 fights, in which he scored 2 goals.
