What is ignorance? Values and examples of use

It seems to everyone intuitively what ignorance is. However, sometimes the path between intuitive understanding and rational knowledge is not a short one, so we will help those who are still in doubt.

Value

ignorance meaning

The word "ignorance" is used in two meanings. Firstly, it is intellectual uncivilization and lack of education. When a person does not know, for example, just like Sherlock Holmes, that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Secondly, the definition of "ignorance" has a colloquial meaning - to behave impolitely, in a boorish manner, to be rude.

Ignorance, ignorance and ignorance

There are two paronyms - ignorant and ignorant. The first is a man who is dark in matters of science, technology, literature and history, and the second is a man of bad manners, uncultured, tactless. As for the question, what is ignorance? Everything is very simple: ignorance includes the semantic content of both ignoramus and ignoramus, so a person can be called ignorant in both senses, and this will not be a mistake.

An example of intellectual ignorance

what is ignorance

Of course, one could say about schoolchildren who consider London the capital of France. And that would be an example of ignorance. But we will not go in such an easy way, but turn to a more memorable case. There was such a Soviet film "The Old Man Hottabych" (1957). Viewers remember the episode when the genie boasts to Volka his knowledge of geography. Hottabych’s level of education may be decent for a genie, but he clearly lagged behind and did not update his data for a long time, speaking in modern language. Therefore Volka, who was broadcasting in the classroom with the voice of a genie, sat in a puddle. And the Soviet schoolboy was even suspected of a mental illness. In other words, everything ended unintelligently, and Hottabych showed his complete ignorance. Although the genie himself would never admit his lack of education. And if he had been asked what ignorance is, he would hardly have answered. Perhaps about good manners he has the same archaic ideas as about everything else. But let's not judge him too harshly, he is a wonderful old man, albeit a genie.

Example of household illiteracy

With bad manners is always easier and more complicated. In the sense that the reader himself will easily choose the appropriate case. And it’s more difficult because bad manners, ignorance in this context are much more difficult to eradicate. For example, a person is used to champing at the table and interrupting interlocutors, and what can be done with him? Nothing, if he is already an adult. You can, of course, ask him if he knows what ignorance is? If he answers, it’s good, then it’s not all lost, but if not, you’ll have to explain what’s what, but there’s little hope of human correction. Great inertia of habit. Anyway, you should not expect too much from people. They feel good inside their way of thinking, acting and living.

So, we examined the concept of "ignorance", its meaning was not so difficult.
