What is gloss? Meaning, synonyms and interpretation

Perhaps people are already quite tired of the glamor as a direction and style and as topics for conversation. But no one will deny that we love people who are well and tastefully dressed rather than those who do not watch their wardrobe. In other words, today we’ll talk about the concept of gloss, this is our object of study.

Value

American writer Charles Bukowski

Anatoly Efremovich Novoseltsev told Lyudmila Prokofievna Kalugina that she lacked gloss. She dresses, they say, gloomily, without frills. For some reason, grayness is stubbornly associated with Soviet reality, but is such an opinion fair? No, it seems. Because the spiritual life in the USSR was clearly richer than now. Although this is strange, now no one stands above the artist and does not force him to comply with the censorship framework. Perhaps this is the answer: there is no one to resist.

The Soviet state collapsed, but the problem of smart presentation of oneself to others remained. Let's first find out what the meaning of the word gloss is:

  1. Gloss, gloss of a smooth surface.
  2. Impeccable appearance, external shine.

As it is easy to understand, the first meaning is direct, the second is figurative. But interestingly, the second value is used much more often than the first. Few people now say that he put a gloss on the table, they usually use more familiar definitions: order or cleanliness.

When we say “gloss”, glamorous girls, who cannot be denied grooming, naturally come to mind. Or anti-examples of people who reject such a culture, for example, Lyudmila Prokofievna Kalugina or Charles Bukowski. We placed the American writer-marginal and the Soviet chief on one line only so that one would look better against the background of the other, and besides, they were really "party comrades."

Synonyms

Smooth clean table

"Gloss" is an ambiguous word, so the reader also needs nouns that can play the role of its semantic replacements. Well, let's not disappoint anyone and provide a list. So:

  • shine;
  • marafet;
  • gloss;
  • order;
  • purity.

As you can see, there is not so much choice in this case. In addition, marafet is a vernacular word, so in a decent society it is better not to use it. But if the reader wants, then who can forbid him? But we must warn of the consequences.

Earlier grayness caused irritation, but now it causes gloss, why?

Glamorous couple

Yes, the question is difficult. Really, is it really so difficult to enjoy life? Rejoice at beautiful female dolls, impeccably groomed. But it turns out that it is not easy.

Why? Gloss is good, but when it gets too much, nausea comes up. The Internet is doing its job. Perhaps earlier, in the USSR, beautiful clothes seemed new to people, because they could not be bought. The company had to get out, and everything was typical. Of course, this is a generalized image, but it is fair.

Recall, for example, the film “The Most Charming and Attractive,” which the main character made a splash when she came to work in jeans. Now, of course, all this looks ridiculous, but then they lived like that. Or another example: in the novel by V. Aksenov “Island of Crimea” there is also a list of things that are in the Crimea, free from the power of the Soviets, but not in Moscow. Yes, it now looks and reads strange, but the novel is a definite monument of the era.

Now, on the contrary, everything is there, but either there is no money for beauty, or you do not want anything, and therefore everything is extremely annoying. Although there are people who follow fashion trends, so to speak, out of sports interest, knowing full well that they still will not find money.

Gloss is a forbidden fruit, which suddenly became an everyday dish, so it is boring. But in fact, many people want, if not to bring shine, then at least look at the level. Well, language literacy is not an obstacle to this, but, on the contrary, help. If you like or, conversely, don't like glamor, then you still need to know what gloss is, because this is another name for gloss.
