Biography of the Russian skier Evgeny Dementyev

Russian skiers regularly show good results, including at the Olympic Games. So, the 2006 Olympics in Turin became the tournament of triumph for Yevgeny Dementyev, who won two medals.

Carier start

Evgeny Aleksandrovich Dementiev was born on January 17, 1983 in the village of Tayozhnoye of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. Studying at school, he began to attend the sports section, where he became interested in skiing and trained under the leadership of Valery Ukhov. At 17, young Zhenya was invited to participate in the Russian championship, where he won a gold medal, thanks to which he was included in the national team for the upcoming starts.

The first three years of the ski biography of Yevgeny Dementyev passed in youth starts, where the young Russian, although he did not get on the podium, but often got into the top ten. To gain professional experience, coaches invited the athlete to the Russian stages of international racing. In 2003, Eugene first appeared on the podium at the World Junior Championships, first taking third place and then celebrating his victory at a 10-kilometer distance.

Olympic success

From that moment it was difficult to imagine the Russian team at the world championships without Evgeny Dementyev. In February 2004, at a stage in France, a Russian replenished his piggy bank with the first medal in the adult championship, winning the “bronze” in the relay, and a little later, in Sweden, he won the personal award, taking the “silver” in the 15 km race.

Not getting into the Olympic team in 2002, Eugene set his sights on the next Olympics and with a great spirit began to prove his need to participate in the next games. As a result, in December 2004, Evgeny Dementyev’s piggy bank was the first personal gold medal in the 15 km race, shortly after which the second one - 30 km.

As a result, at the Olympics in Turin in 2006, one of the contenders for a high result was Yevgeny Dementyev. A skier from Russia in the first race confirmed his serious intentions - in the 15 + 15 km duathlon he had no equal, and he brought the national team a gold medal. The team failed to perform well in the relay race - the Russian quartet turned out to be only the sixth, but in the 50 km marathon, Yevgeny was again on the podium, becoming the second.

Doping scandal

After success in Turin, the Russian skier continued his successful performance at the World Championships, and over the next three years he climbed four times to the first step of the podium, three times in his personal program. But in 2009, the media published sad news for fans - Eugene Dementiev, the Olympic champion of Turin, was suspected of using doping. His test “A” showed a positive result, after which the Russian announced the end of his career, refusing to search for the guilty party.

Return to the big sport

But after the expiration of the period of disqualification, Eugene decided to return to the big sport, hoping to get to the Olympic Games in Sochi. At first, the Russian skier played only in the national championships and European championships, but failed to return to the national team, eventually missing, in addition to the home Olympics, the World Cup.

But these failures did not break Yevgeny Dementyev - the Russian is still continuing his sports career, steadily winning medals for the national team in both European and world tournaments. At the moment, Dementiev has counted 14 gold and silver, as well as 10 bronze medals in competitions at various levels. Eugene won the last award at the Italian stage of the World Cup - in the 11 km race he became the second.

Personal life

Shortly before leaving sports, in 2009, Yevgeny Dementyev got married and is now engaged in the upbringing of his son Daniel, who was born in 2010. After leaving sports, Eugene does not think about his plans, but I am sure that his further career will be necessarily connected with skiing.
