The future ice king was born in 1970 in Šiauliai, a quiet Lithuanian city near Kaunas. According to family tradition, the boy was called Povilas, or rather, Povilas the fourth. For some time his life went on a different, non-sporting course. He expressed a desire to follow in the footsteps of his paternal relatives and went to medical school. Then he wanted to study international law, and for this purpose the young man went to Moscow to enter MGIMO, but, unfortunately, could not overcome the competition, although he passed the exams. When it came time to serve in the army, he, as a former athlete, was sent to the CSKA club. Here he again skated, and began to skate not in solo, but in pair skating.
